Little four-year-old Lizzie was practically inconsolable, tears filling her big blue eyes as she looked up at her grandparents. “It hurts!” she cried, tears starting to spill down her cheeks over the cut on her knee.

“I know, baby,” her grandfather sighed, “Now what can we do to make it feel better?”

She blinked up at them, giving them an innocent look, “Can I have a popsicle?” Her grandmother rolled her eyes, before nodding.

“Red or orange?”

“Red,” she smiled, “And can I have a band-aid?”

“Done,” her grandfather replied, picking her up and placing her on the edge of the sink. He pulled a box of band-aids out of the medicine cabinet.

“Will you kiss it just like my mommy does?”

“Is there any other way to put on a band-aid?” he replied, and she gave him a grin. He washed off the area around the cut, gave it a quick kiss, the bristles of his beard tickling the area around the cut. He then put on the band-aid, and looked her in the eyes again.

“You’re almost a better boo-boo kisser than my mommy!” Lizzie said to him in surprise.

“Well, I’ve had a lot of practice,” he replied, picking her up and carrying her into the living room, “Your dad had a lot of boo-boos when he was younger.”

“And Grandpa?”

“Yes, Miss Lizzie?”

“Can you tell me a story?”

“Absolutely,” he replied, giving her a nod as they sat down together on the couch, “Which one would you like to here?”

“How bout a new one?” she asked.

“Alright, I think I’ve got a new one in there somewhere,” he thought about it for a second before beginning, “Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful princess in an enchanted tower—”

“That’s Rapunzel,” Lizzie pouted, “I’ve heard that one before.”

“Once upon a time there lived a beautiful but evil queen with an enchanted mirror—”

“Snow White,” Lizzie frowned, “Heard it.”

Her grandfather mumbled something under his breath about how beggars couldn’t be choosers, when he started up again, “Once upon a time, there lived—”

“Heard it,” Lizzie cut him off.

“How do you know?” the man frowned.

“Beauty and the Beast?”

“Hmph,” he sighed, before a light bulb went off over his head, “Got one I’m sure you haven’t heard. Once upon a time, there was a brave knight named Sir Danny.”

“Sir Danny?” Lizzie frowned, “What kind of a name is that?”

“Are you telling the story or am I?”

“Fine,” Lizzie sighed.

“Now, Sir Danny, was one of the bravest and most handsome knights in all the land. He devoted his life to saving damsels in distress—and the occasional man in distress—and was considered the bravest man to ever live in New York-alot. All the women loved him. Often times, he had to beat him off with a stick.”

Her grandmother cleared her throat as she walked into the room, holding a red popsicle in her hands. “You don’t like the way I’m telling my story?” he said to her, a mischievous glint in his eye.

“I just wish you would stick to the facts and make ‘Sir’ Danny a bit more believable,” she stated, “If I remember correctly, he’s not quite the charmer you make him out to be.”

He blinked at her for a second, before turning to his granddaughter, “Grandma’s just jealous because I can tell the story better than she can.” Grandma shot her husband a look, and he gave her a quick smile before she left the room.

“But alas, all the women in the world wouldn’t make a difference, because in his heart, he was in love with the beautiful Princess Kaile. Princess Kaile was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She was smart, funny, and caring and compassionate to all creatures.”

“Was she as pretty as Rapunzel?” Lizzie asked, now completely enraptured in the story since there was a beautiful princess involved.

“Rapunzel wished she was as pretty as Princess Kaile,” Grandpa replied before continuing with the story, “Princess Kaile seemed to return his love, but it was forbidden for them to be together because the King’s decree said that she could only marry someone of royal blood, and just being a plain old knight just didn’t cut it.”

“Then, one day, Princess Kaile was kidnapped by the cruel Lord Paul. He was a very bad man, who didn’t pay his taxes and kicked puppies.” This admission warranted a gasp from his granddaughter, and a warning look from his wife, who had settled into the seat across the room,

Grandpa.”

“OK, he maybe didn’t kick puppies,” Grandpa admitted, “But he was still a very bad man. After all, he didn’t pay his taxes. Always pay your taxes.” Lizzie rolled her eyes, and Grandpa could see Grandma smirking out of the corner of his eye.

“Get on with the story already!” Lizzie complained.

“Sir Danny, hearing that his beloved was in trouble, charged off to her rescue, single-handedly—” Grandma cleared her throat. “—I mean, and with the help of his friends, Sir Flack and Sir Mac, beat down Lord Paul’s army, and confronted the evil Lord Paul in his vile lair. Lord Paul wasn’t ready to give up without a fight though. He used his powerful magic to hurt the Princess, causing her to fall down as though she was dead.”

“Oh, no!” Lizzie gasped, and Grandma watched as her husband told his story, a small smile on her lips.

“While Sir Mac and Sir Flack took care of the vile Lord Paul, Sir Danny rushed to Princess Kaile’s side, desperately searching for a way to bring her back. He couldn’t think of anything else to do but give her one, soft kiss.”

Lizzie was hanging out his every word, eyes wide, he gave her a smile, and she grinned, knowing already that the story was going to have a happy ending.

“It worked!” he grinned, “Princess Kaile came back to life, kind of like Sleeping Beauty. Sir Danny swept up Princess Kaile, and brought her back to her castle, where they decided to completely ignore the King’s orders, got married, and lived happily ever after. The End.”

At that, a pair of headlights flashed across the window of the room, and Grandpa glanced out the window, “And there’s your mother. Boo-boo feeling better?”

Lizzie nodded enthusiastically, and she gave him a kiss on the cheek, “Thanks Grandpa.”

“Anytime, sweetheart,” he nodded. Her mother came, and left, and then he felt his wife’s arms come around him from behind.

“Let’s see,” she sighed, “Evil Lord Paul, convicted serial killer Paul Hopkins. Dark magic, me getting shot. But waking me up with a kiss?”

“I was supposed to be telling a fairy tale,” he smirked, “Using his jacket to apply pressure to the wound doesn’t necessarily imply ‘heroic’ in a four year-old’s mind.” He turned around and wrapped his arms around his wife’s waist, “But I got the happily ever after part right.”

“Yeah,” she grinned, leaning in to a soft kiss, “Yeah, ya did.”
