“Meet Me at the Fair”
“Lindsay!” Haley Hartford’s squealed over the crowd when she spotted Lindsay Monroe making her way through the crowd at the Holy Trinity Church Feast. It was the church’s annual fund raiser, and Don had asked Lindsay to come with him on the day he was going, but at the last minute, something came up at work and she told him she would meet him there.
When she said that, she didn’t realize that she would be meeting the entire Flack clan there as well.
“Hey Hales,” she grinned, crouching down to give the girl a hug. Haley squeezed Lindsay tightly before taking her hand, and dragging her over to the table with the rest of the Flacks. After that she got a rousing hello from the rest of the Flacks, and she was ushered into a seat between Don Flack and his cousin, Evelyn.
“I wanna go on the rides,” Scott Hartford complained after the adults had talked for a while.
“Me too,” his twin brother Joey sighed, both of them grabbing onto Evelyn’s hands and puling on them as hard as they could. “C’mon, Aunt Evie, let’s go.”
“Alright, alright,” Evelyn sighed, “Anybody else coming?”
“I wanna play games,” Haley replied from her seat in Don’s lap, “Will you play games with me?” She looked up and Don expectantly, and he nodded.
“Sure, babe.” He turned to Lindsay and gave her a look, “How bout you, Linds?”
“I think I’m going to hit the rides,” Lindsay replied, and Evelyn shot her a silent look of thanks before Lindsay was grabbed by Joey, and both women were dragged off in the direction of the fairway.
Don turned to Maria, the children’s mother, and gave her a look, “What do you feed those kids?”
“Nothing your mother didn’t feed you,” Maria replied, “I swear, it’s all from their father.”
“Uh-huh,” Don nodded, before turning to the cousin in his lap, “Alright Hales. What do you want to play first?”
“Water guns!” she squealed, before hopping off Don’s lap and pulling him in the direction of the games area.

Three hours and thirty bucks later, Don had Haley on his shoulders, he had a giant stuffed monkey sticking out of a banana in one hand, and a giant blue shark in the other, while Haley had a small stuffed monkey in one hand that read “kiss me” across the stomach.
“Still got an empty hand, Hales,” he sighed, glancing up at the girl.
“Yup.”
“Alright, where to next?” he sighed.
“Umm—” Haley sighed, “—Oh! A turtle!” She pointed to one of the stands, where there were various stuffed turtles and lizards on display.
“A turtle it is,” Don replied, before walking over to the stand. He placed Haley down on the stand, and stared at the contraption in front of him. “Excuse me,” Don replied, “What are we supposed to do?”
The attendant spun around, and her eyes went wide, “No way. Donnie Flack?”
His jaw dropped when he realized who the person was “Dinah Anderson?”
“Oh my God,” she laughed, leaning over the stand to give him a hug, “How have you been?”
“I’ve been good,” he nodded.
“And who’s this?” Dinah grinned at Haley, giving the girl a smile.
“Remember my cousin Maria?”
“Yup.”
“Hers.”
“You’re kidding,” Dinah grinned, “You mean some girl hasn’t gotten you to procreate yet?” Don laughed and shook his head no, and Dinah rolled her eyes, “Don, you’re too pretty. You must share your good genes with the rest of the human race.”
“Well, I haven’t found the right girl yet,” he replied. Dinah and Don carried on an easy conversation until Haley started to get impatient.
“Are you gonna talk all day,” she sighed, pouting with her hands on her hips, “Or are you going to win me a turtle?”
Don gave her a look, “Fine. How do I do this?”
“Use the mallet to hit the frog up onto a table. If it stays on the table you get a turtle,” Dinah replied, and Don reluctantly fished out his wallet, and handed the girl a dollar. He aimed, fired, and the rubber frog went flying up into the stand, completely missing the table.
“Two tries for a dollar,” Dinah replied, resetting the game.
“I’ll get it this time,” Don sighed, taking aim again, but again missing the table entirely. He fished out another dollar, and handed it to the girl.
“Not as easy as it looks, huh?” Dinah grinned.
“Yeah,” Don replied, “But just give me a minute, I’ll get it.”
“Physics”
Fifteen dollars later, Don still hadn’t won the turtle, and the game had frustrated him so much that he was refusing to leave the stand until he had indeed landed that stupid rubber frog on the small table.
“Don, stop wasting your money,” Dinah begged, “I don’t the odds are in your favor for this one.”
“The frog is going on the stupid table, Dinah,” Don replied, “I’m getting that stupid turtle.”
“Hey guys,” Lindsay sighed, finally returning from the ride area.
“Hey Linds,” Don replied, and Dinah mouthed to the other woman, ‘Stop him!’
“Whatcha doin?” she asked.
“Trying to get the frog on the table,” Don sighed, taking aim again, and missing entirely.
“Hmm,” she sighed, studying the game for a second. “Can I try?”
“Yeah, sure,” Don replied, nodding towards the other setup on the stand, “There’s two of em.”
Lindsay blinked at him for a second, before moving over to the other setup. “Is he OK?” she asked Dinah, as the other woman setup the game for her.
“He’s developed a personal vendetta against the frog,” Dinah replied, “I’ve seen before. Summer of 1992. Refused to leave the stand until he had cleared the table of the six tin cans.”
“I see,” Lindsay replied, paying for the game before taking aim at the table and whacking the game with the mallet. She missed on the first try, and the frog landed in a pile of orange lizards.
“See?” Don replied, briefly glancing up from the game, “Not as easy as it looks.”
Lindsay shot him a look, before actually studying the game. The angles, and the distances. Looking at it as a scientist rather than a player. She lined the catapult up, took aim, and fired. The rubber frog arced through the air and landed directly on the table and stayed there.
“We have a winner!” Dinah laughed, and Don looked up from his game in shock.
“What?”
“Which one did you want, Hales?” Lindsay asked, and the girl pointed to one of the turtles, on the stand and Dinah handed it over to her.
“What?” Don continued, still finding it hard to believe that Lindsay had beaten the game in the one dollar.
“Physics, sweetie,” she whispered, giving him a kiss on the cheek as she and Haley walked past him again, “All in the physics.”
***
“I wanna go on the Ferris Wheel,” Haley grinned from her spot between her father’s legs. Mark Hartford had arrived sometime during the course of the evening, and had taken over winning prizes for his youngest child.
“You do, do you?” Mark sighed, looking down at the little girl, “Well, let’s go.” Haley took his hand and dragged him off in the direction of the ride. After watching them go, Lindsay turned to Don, and gave him a smile.
“I wanna go on the Ferris Wheel.”
“Babe, I’d love to,” he sighed, wrapping an arm around her waist, “But we’d have to buy tickets, and the other woman in my life cleaned me out.”
“Good thing I brought cash then,” she replied, before holding up a fistful of ride tickets and grabbing his hand to pull him towards the Ferris Wheel. They got in on the car behind Haley and Mark, and when the ride finally creaked to a stop, they were sitting just under the crest of the ride.
“It’s beautiful out here,” she whispered, curling into Don’s shoulder. The skyline just fell out in front of them, and the stars sparkled above them, and it was just queit.
“Yeah, it is,” he sighed, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, and turning to face her.
“Ever kissed someone on a Ferris Wheel?” she asked, for some reason curious.
“Actually, yeah,” he grinned, “In high school.”
“Really?” Lindsay laughed.
“Yeah,” Don nodded, “But it was only one other girl.
“One other girl?” Lindsay frowned, confused.
“Yeah,” Don grinned, “Other than you.” Before she could respond, he leaned in and captured her lips in a warm kiss, tasting something similar to a combination of cheesesteak and cotton candy.
Lindsay responded warmly to him, and they were completely lost in the moment until a small voice was heard from above them.
“Ewww! They’re kissing,” Haley’s voice echoed from above them. Lindsay broke away from Don with a smile, and they both glanced up at the two faces leaning down from above them.
“Keep it PG you two,” Mark teased, “We are near a church.”
Don rolled his eyes and turned back to the woman in front of him. ‘I love you,’ he mouthed to her, and she gave him another quick kiss as the ride started to move again.
“I love you too,” she whispered as the kiss broke, settling back into his embrace.
