Lindsay - Her Name
...gah! i was supposed to be writing fluff today! *grumbles something about stupid angsty plot bunnies*
Title: Her Name
Author: Me!
Rating: FRK
Content Warning: Spoilers for "Heroes"
Summary: In that way, the way her name just hung over Lindsay’s head, it was in somewhat a promise saying that she would always have to try and fill the big shoes that Aiden had left behind. Lindsay on Aiden.
Disclaimer: I own nothing you recognize.
Author's Note: I was looking at promo pics for "Heroes" and this popped into my head. That's where it came from.
Aiden.
She hung over everything like a curse these days. Ever since the case had been closed, the briefest mention of her, brought a smile, then a look of pain to every co-worker’s face. And every time it happened, it was a constant reminder to Lindsay of who she wasn’t. Who she replaced. Who she felt she couldn’t live up to, whose shoes she couldn’t fill and who she was tired of trying to overcome.
She saw the loss in everyone. Even Flack. Someone else would bring up the subject, something funny Aiden did on a case one time. A small smile would curl up the side of his face, a brief flash in his bright blue eyes, and then it was gone. The subject would be changed, the moment over, almost as if it had never happened.
It was actually somewhat frustrating, getting her co-workers to try and get to know her. They all got along, worked together well, that wasn’t the problem. It was getting them to let her in. She didn’t feel like she knew any of them, or any of them knew her. They were just co-workers. Acquaintances. She didn’t really think that she could justify calling them her friends.
Lindsay wondered what made Aiden such a human being as to be put on a pedestal like that. She wasn’t perfect. From what she had heard, Aiden had made just about as many mistakes as the rest of them. She got herself into bad situations. True, Mac had always been there to bail her out before—Mac had always been there to bail them out—but still. She was nowhere near as perfect. Not even close. And yet, there was practically as shrine in her honor among the people Lindsay went to work with everyday.
It was almost as if Lindsay was the other woman. The next wife after the man had been widowed, married too soon, while the heart was still broken. Lindsay could try her hardest to make the husband smile, make him forget the first woman. The woman he had loved with all his heart and thought that was to stay with him forever, yet taken too soon from him.
But it would never happen. Because in the back of his mind, he would always compare her to the one who came first. The one he loved first. The one he would never forget.
And in that way, the way her name just hung over Lindsay’s head, it was in somewhat a promise saying that she would always have to try and fill the big shoes that Aiden had left behind. After all, if she didn’t, Lindsay knew that she was never going to have the power to overcome the weight that name rested on her shoulders. Somewhat like the weight of the world, but more like the weight of those five people’s world. Because that one name was what it was.
Aiden.
