There was this ring Danny wore on his finger. Middle finger of the right hand. Kaile didn’t know where he had gotten it, who had given it to him, or why he wore it, but it was another one of those puzzles that Kaile had yet to figure out about Danny Messer.

She studied the man was sleeping next to her, his hair a dirty blond mess, and his face relaxed peacefully in sleep. Just like she had left him before she had closed her eyes the night before. Only the sheets were more tightly wound around his waist and he was in a slightly different position.

She reached out for the hand with the ring on it, and started playing with the thin white gold band on his finger. She didn’t know why this small piece of jewelry intrigued her so much, but it did. Danny just didn’t seem the type to wear rings.

She wondered if a girl had given it to him. A past relationship that meant something to him, enough for him to keep the ring. Maybe she was the first girl he ever loved or the first girl he ever slept with or the first—

She sat back for a second, remembering that none of those firsts were her. That makes any girl uncomfortable, considering what Danny Messer did to her. She had always been careful with guys. She didn’t let them get too close, too fast. She always had played it safe. Kept things comfortable.

Danny had been a whole other ballgame.

Right from the get-go, he had been something else. A bit of roguish charm, and quick bit of lip and she was hooked. He asked her out for drinks, and she was careful. A bit of easy conversation, some fun flirting, but she didn’t let it go too far. Although having him pin her against her door while they made out like teenage kids would be considered farther than she would usually go. And a few weeks later, she was in his bed. No promise of commitment, not even really fuck buddies, just hot, no-strings-attached sex. Practically a one-night stand. Only he kept coming back. And so did she.

Now she was even more confused than she was before.

He started to stir, and he blinked a blue eye blearly open at her. “What are you doing?”

“Playing with your ring,” she replied as innocently as possible. He glanced down at the ring, as if he was just remembering it was there.

“This thing?” he murmured, “Can’t even remember where I got it.”

“Then why do you wear it,” she laughed.

“Force of habit,” he grinned, and they just stared at each other for a second, before Danny spoke up. “What the hell are we doing, Maka?”

“I thought I was Kaile outside the office,” she replied, slightly disappointed that he used her last name.

“Well, Kaile,” he sighed, moving in closer to her, pulling an arm across her waist rolling them over so that he was lying on top, “What the hell are we doing?”

“I dunno,” she replied, “We look like we’re about to go in for round two, but you’re giving me the impression you’re thinking of something else.”

He took his hand, brushing her hair behind her ear, a mess from the night of sleep combined with their activities from the night before. “You wanna be with me? You know commitment and all that bullshit.”

“Gee, Messer, you really know how to sweet talk a girl.”

“Answer the question, Kaile,” he replied, a smile playing on his lips.

“Yeah, Danny,” she nodded, “I want commitment and all that bullshit.”

“Danny, what happened to your ring?” Lindsay asked, catching the other CSI in the hall. Maka watched from the other end of the hallway. Lindsay flirted with Danny a lot, but Maka wasn’t worried.

“Ring, Montana?” Danny frowned.

“Yeah, a ring,” Lindsay sighed, demonstrating with her hand, “Friday you had it, now you don’t.”

“Must of lost it somewhere,” Danny shrugged, before turning back to the file in front of him. Privately, Maka was grinning. She knew exactly where his ring was. On the necklace around her neck.

She didn’t have to worry about Lindsay. Danny was hers. She knew that without a doubt in her mind. After all, even though he claimed it meant nothing, she knew better. He wouldn’t be wearing it if it didn’t mean something.

And he wouldn’t have given it to her, if it didn’t mean something.

THE END
