“How the hell did this happen?”

Christina was standing quietly next to Steele, listening as Flack explained the situation. She really didn’t want to be out here, in the hallway, she wanted to be inside the hospital room, but she was wanted to know what happened just as badly as Steele did. This wasn’t supposed to happen.

Flack had been taken off the case, and Maka had been put on in his place, and the rest of the CSIs were off processing the evidence and trying to figure out how they did it, but Flack still knew some of the details.

“We think one of Sonny’s boys wanted to send us a message,” Flack sighed, “But I don’t think he was the original target.” His eyes glanced over at Christina, and her eyes closed.

“You think he was coming after me?” she asked.

“I think he was trying to get under Danny’s skin, and if he knew about you two, that would be the way to do it,” Flack replied.

“How would he even know about Danny and Christina to begin with?” Steele asked, “I barely even knew.”

“We ran into him at a restaurant today when we were having lunch,” Christina replied, his eyes still closed, “He was hassling Danny, and then he turned on me, to piss Danny off. I threatened him with a sexual harassment suit.”

Flack smirked, “Probably didn’t scare him much.”

“Yeah, but it got him to go away, without having Danny attack him,” she sighed, starting to play with her hair, “Do we know it was related to him?”

“We’ve got nothing conclusive yet,” Flack replied, “But my gut’s telling me that his hands aren’t totally clean on this.”

Christina turned away from the group, and looked into the window of the hospital. He was conscious by the time they got there, but whoever attacked him had done significant damage. Several broken ribs, multiple contusions, broken hand, broken jaw. He couldn’t talk, but he could write. The hospital had given him paper and a marker to write with, but he had been asleep for most of the stay, so he hadn’t really used it yet. The beating probably wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and for that she was grateful. Still didn’t change the fact that it shouldn’t have happened to begin with. Wrapping her arms around her waist, she turned back to them, and interrupted what they were saying.

“You two still need me?” she asked, and Flack shook his head.

“Probably not,” he replied, “Maka’s gonna want to talk to you when she gets here though—about what happened at the restaurant.”

“OK,” she said, nodding slowly, “Let me know when she gets here.”

Flack nodded in agreement before turning back to Steele. Christina walked into the room and sat on the side of the bed, facing him. She slipped a hand into his, and gave it a light squeeze. He stirred, and blinked up at her. He looked confused for a minute, and she realized he probably couldn’t see her—he didn’t have his glasses.

“It’s me, Danny,” she whispered, “Its Chris.” He started to move slightly, and she placed a hand on his thigh to stop him. “Hey, hey, easy. Want me to sit you up?”

He nodded, and she found the button on the bed. Once he was sitting up, she sat back down next to him again, and took his hand again. He squeeze her hand back, before using his injured hand to point towards the tray with the paper and marker on it, and she moved it closer to him. He took his hand out of hers, and picked up the marker and started to write. The letters were shaky at first, and she realized it wasn’t the hand he usually wrote with, but it was still legible.

Did he hurt you?

“No, baby, no,” she shook her head, “I was at work when they called Steele—I didn’t go home.”

He looked relieved, more relaxed, as though he had been worried. She smiled and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, “I’m just glad you’re gonna be OK.”

What’s going on?

“Everybody’s working to figure out who did this,” she sighed, “We’re gonna get this guy, alright?”

He nodded slowly, putting his hand back into hers again. She filled up the air with pointless stuff that had happened at work, just to fill the silence, until there was a knock on the door of the hospital room. Christina turned and saw Maka standing there, and nodded to her as the woman entered.

“How ya doin’, Messer?” she asked with a smile, and he scribbled something on the piece of paper before holding it up to her.

Just peachy.

“Can’t even speak and he’s still a smartass,” Maka smirked, “I thought I was going to have to talk to you first, Finn, but since he’s up and somewhat alert, I guess I’ll talk to him.”

“That’s fine,” Christina nodded, and she got up and Danny started writing again.

I love you.

“I know, she whispered, giving him a kiss on the forehead before walking away, “I love you too.”

She stepped outside, and saw Jess and Billy standing in the hallway.

“Where’s Steele?”

“Back at the crimelab with Peluso, trying to figure out what they’ve got,” Billy replied, “How’s he doing?”

“Pretty well,” Christina nodded, “Doctors said it looks like there wasn’t any substancial brain damage, so he should be fine. Said it could have been worse.”

“How are you doing?” Jess asked.

“I’m alright,” she nodded.

“Did you find a place to stay for tonight?” Billy asked, and Christina looked up surprise.

“What?”

“You can’t go back to your place, it’s a crime scene,” he said patiently.

“Oh, God, I didn’t even think of that,” she said, resting her forehead against the heel of her hand, “Where am I going to go?”

“Why don’t you come stay with me?” Jess asked, “I got room.”

“You sure?” Christina asked.

“Yeah, it’s not a problem,” Jess replied, “Just let me know when you’re ready to go.”

“I will,” Christina nodded, “Thanks.” She turned back towards the window and watched as he talked with Maka. This was all going to be over soon.

Hopefully.
