“We haven’t been out like this in a while,” Christina commented with a smile as they slid into the booth at the small Italian restaurant. This wasn’t a place she was familiar with, but Danny seemed to know the people who worked there pretty well, so she was feeling a bit more comfortable. This was the first time they’d been on a date in a while, and she was determined to relax and enjoy the time together.
“Yeah, well—I figured since we had the time, why not?” Danny grinned, sitting across from her.
“So—what’s good here?” she asked flipping open the menu. He began to ramble off some of the names, and she listened to him while reading along on the menu. She almost didn’t catch it when she heard it, but she did. There was a slight hitch in his voice, and while she usually would let it go, the circumstances were not ones where she was comfortable with that.
“Danny?” she frowned, looking up, and he was looking at something over his shoulder. She started to turn to follow his gaze, but his hand fell on hers, stopping her.
“It’s nothing,” he replied, shaking his head, “Just thought I saw someone I knew.”
“You sure?” she asked, concerned.
“Yeah, yeah,” he nodded, his eyes falling to the menu again, “It’s fine. I think I’m gonna have the chicken fettuccine, how bout you?”
They fell into easy conversation as the food came, and the meal seemed to pass without a hitch, until they were finished with the entrée, and a shadow fell over the table. He looked up and Christina saw the color drain slightly from Danny’s face.
“Well, well, well,” a mocking voice said from next to them. She looked up and saw a face she knew and wished she didn’t. Sonny Sassone was leaning over them, giving Danny a grin she wasn’t quite comfortable with, “If it isn’t little Danny Messer, big bad police man.”
“What do you want, Sonny?” he said coldly.
“I just wanted to say hello to an old friend—how’s your brother?”
“I don’t know,” Danny replied, “I haven’t talked to him in a while.”
“Well—when you see him, tell him I said, hey, alright?” Sonny said, and Danny’s face hardened.
“I’ll do that.”
“And who else do we have here,” Sonny said, turning to Christina, “Assistant District Attorney Christina Finn. Well—looks like you’re banging the big time, aren’t you there Messer?”
She saw Danny’s jaw set, and he spoke through gritted teeth, “Don’t talk about her like that.”
“Well, I don’t mean no disrespect on the part of Miss Finn,” Sonny smirked, “But if I had known she would have opened her legs for just any ol’ mutt, I would have tried a long time ago.”
Danny tensed and started to get up, but Christina grabbed his hand and stopped him, “If you’re done berating us, Mr. Sassone, I could let Deputy Bureau Chief Steele know that I wish to add a charge of sexual harassment to the list of charges that he has already arraigned you on. I’m sure we could find a few witnesses around here to back up that statement, and I don’t think you want a civil suit against you in addition to the criminal charges.”
Sonny paused for a minute, studying the woman for a moment. Christina’s face didn’t change, she just maintained a relative calm and quirked an eyebrow in interest. “Well—make sure you give that message to your brother, Messer.”
“I will,” Danny replied, watching them as they walked out, and turning around to face her again. His face was void, no emotion whatsoever, and she frowned, worried.
“Danny?” she asked.
“Maybe I should get the check,” he said, and Christina took his hand.
“Maybe we should talk—”
“Not now, later alright?” he continued, not looking up at her, “I—I need to cool off a bit first.”
“OK,” she replied, slowly, “But you will talk to me, right?”
He looked up at her, and nodded, “Yeah—yeah, I’ll talk.”
“OK,” she sighed, before glancing at her watch, “You got the check? I have to get back to court.”
“Yeah, yeah, I got it.” She nodded, and gave him a quick kiss before getting up.
“Alright,” she sighed, “I’ll see you after work.”

Christina rubbed her eyes lightly, and tried to focus on the paperwork in front of her. She didn’t expect for the jury to come back so soon, and now she was drowning in paperwork. She wanted to get home, because she and Danny needed to talk, but she would rather not be worrying about the paperwork on her desk when Danny was trying to get something out to her. She needed to have her mind clear, but if that meant she was going to be late, so be it.
She looked down at the files in front of her, and signed off on the last couple notes, when she heard the phone in Steele’s office go off. She rolled her eyes when it was picked up on the second ring. Steele needed a life. He wasn’t going to get that if he kept working the way he did.
“Son of a bitch,” he stormed out of his office and slammed the door behind him. Christina looked up in concern, and when he spotted her sitting there, he walked towards her and took her arm. “You need to come with me.”
“Jim?” she frowned.
“Something’s happened, and you need to come to the hospital with me.”
“What’s going on?” she asked pulling away from him, and looking at him dead in the eye.
“Danny was attacked outside your apartment and he’s in the hospital,” he explained, and Christina faltered slightly, “What?”
“You need to come with me.”
“OK,” she whispered.

at the point where i'm stopping canon, danny and louie haven't spoken on a regular basis in a while, and it's usually when he needs legal help or money. Louie and Sonny used to run together when they were kids.
i'm glad you liked it though.
