Danny/Christina - Bringing Work Home with You

my danny/christina muse is back! yay!

Fandom: CSI:NY/Conviction
Title: Bringing Work Home With You
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Danny Messer/Christina Finn
[livejournal.com profile] csi50 Prompt: 025. cold
[livejournal.com profile] 7rainbowprompts Prompt: 1. Whispers in the Night
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: Danny's been working late on a big case, and Christina worries.
Author's Note: For [livejournal.com profile] makeitstopjamie. Part of my Fork in the Road series. This started out as starting out angsty and turning into schmoop, and where it's going in my head there probably will be a follow up (and possibly an epic) with more angst and less schmoop.
For Reference: CSI:NY and Conviction. If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask, I don't mind answering.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY or Conviction. They're owned by CBS and NBC.

Note: Since this series is already pretty AU for season 2 (and three at this point), I'm ending canon around "Bad Beat." I think that was when Lindsay was more annoyed with Danny and less starting to tolerate him. This means (and this is more for the future storyline than for this one) that "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "Heroes" didn't happen. "Run Silent, Run Deep" is almost firmly not going to be considered canon for this, but "Heroes" is still up in the air. That is all.

It was starting to get late. She knew she really had nothing to worry about. Danny was a big boy and could take care of himself, he had been long before he met her, but this case was making her nervous. The case he was working had too many big names attached to it, and not big in the sense of people with big political names. Big in the sense of some big dangerous names, and when that kind of stuff came around, she worried. It was in her nature. And until he was back home next to her, she probably wasn’t going to be getting any sleep.

She heard that Steele, who was going to be prosecuting the case, was already getting some threats, ordering him to swing the case a certain way, and she could only imagine what the cops were getting, considering they were the ones handling the evidence. Not to mention the fact that she was seeing what the case was doing to Danny. He usually took mob cases a little more personally, but this—this was something different entirely. And the most frustrating part was that he wouldn’t talk to her about it. He shut her out, and she understood that he was just doing what he did—but on some level it hurt that he didn’t trust her.

She glanced at the clock again before her eyes went back to the file in front of her. If she was going to be up late, alone, in her apartment, she might as well be working. She started reading over the depositions again, taking notes on it for her opening statement, when she heard the front door open. She debated for a minute whether to turn off the lights, and pretend to be asleep, but it wasn’t worth the time it would take to get everything away. He would probably be waking her up anyway, might as well not hide the fact that she already was. The bedroom door swung open, and she saw the look of surprise that crossed his face.

“I thought you would be asleep,” he said.

“Work on the brain,” she lied, gesturing to her notes.

“Oh,” he shrugged before starting to unbutton his dress shirt and sitting down on the side of the bed.

“It’s pretty late,” she commented, and he shrugged.

“Mac gave me the day off tomorrow, so I figured I’d put in a few extra hours before I clocked out.”

“Everything alright with the case?” she asked, and he looked up at her in alarm.

“Everything’s fine,” he replied quickly, “Why would you ask that?”

“You’ve seemed a bit off lately,” Christina replied, slightly taken aback, “And I know Steele’s been getting a lot of pressure on our end, so I was just—asking.”

“Already?” he frowned, and she nodded. “How’s he taking it?”

“He’s being Steele,” she sighed, “And you know doesn’t take that kind of stuff from anyone, no matter how much they threaten.”

“Good,” Danny nodded, turning to her and giving her a smile, “I’m OK though. Really.”

“OK,” she replied, and he leaned in and gave her a quick kiss. Cold skin and a scratch of stubble brushed against her face, and when they parted, she switched the subject to something less involved. “Got cold outside.”

“Yeah,” he nodded, “I’m gonna hop in the shower. Get some sleep. You’re working too hard.” He placed another kiss on her forehead, before getting up and starting to walk away.

“You’re one to talk,” she gave him a look, and he laughed.

“But I don’t bring work home.”

“No, you don’t. You just stay at the damn lab for hours on end,” she said, and he gave her the look this time, and she held up her hands, “Dropping it. Putting it away. Going to sleep.”

“Good,” he said, before disappearing into the bathroom.

When he emerged from the shower, the room was dark, and Christina was curled up under her covers. He slid in next to her and wrapped an arm around her. She rolled over into him, but didn’t say anything, figuring he was about to slip off to sleep.

“You know what?” he began, and she looked up at him.

“What?”

“You have to work tomorrow, right?” he asked, and she nodded.

“Yeah.”

“What do ya say we have lunch? Just you and me. I don’t have to work, so we can just work with whatever schedule you’ve got.”

She smiled, “I’d like that.”

“Good,” he nodded, “We haven’t actually done anything in a while.”

“We’ve been too busy.”

“I was starting to miss you,” he commented and she grinned before leaning in to give him a quick kiss. He started to deepen it slightly and she pulled away.

“Uh-uh,” she sighed, “I’ve got to get up tomorrow. If we start that now, I won’t get up on time.”

“So then you’ll just call in sick,” he murmured, starting to kiss her again.

She giggled, “I’ll lose my job.”

“That wouldn’t be good then, would it?”

“No,” she shook her head, their noses brushing as she did, “No, it wouldn’t.”

“I guess I should let you sleep then.”

“Might be a good idea.” A wicked grin slowly crossed her face, “But I’ll make it up to you.”

“Really?” he said, his grin matching hers.

“Mmm-hmm,” she nodded.

“Guess I’ll have to look forward to lunch then,” he whispered and she grinned.

“Guess you will.”

i'm glad you liked it.
