She decided that this thing with Brian could either be a really good thing, or a really, really bad thing.
It was that bit of uncertainty that told him to take it slow. She didn’t want to be doing anything she regretted while she was still very new to New York, and didn’t really have anywhere to go that really felt like home. So she and Brian were going to take this slow, and that there were still two ways it could go.
It could take the good route, and be this slow building warm comfortable relationship, that could last. She saw the possibility of being very happy with Brian. He was sweet and charming and made her laugh. There was this comfortable ease between them, and she liked that. That was the kind of relationship she wanted, something easy that she didn’t have to fight for. If you had to fight for a relationship, in her opinion, that wasn’t really one you wanted. Fighting for something usually meant you were never meant to have it.
But then again, it could the way of the bad route, and this could be just a long, slow, bittersweet form of suicide. Brian was a nice guy, but the way he kissed her told her that he had the potential to be the kind of guy your mother always warned you against. He had experience, there was no denying that, and at this point it was just a matter of how hers would stock up. She wasn’t exactly naïve, but she wasn’t New York City savvy either. Brian had a leg up on her there, and she was afraid that if she couldn’t keep up, she was going to wind up with a broken heart. And that was the last thing she needed to happen right now.
But she wasn’t really worrying about that.
“Hi,” she whispered in his ear as she came up behind him. He had been sitting at his desk, engrossed in something, but she could see the twitch of a smile on his face, before he turned around.
“Hi,” he said, “What’re you doin’ over here?”
“Desmond was prepping me for trial,” she replied, “And I was wondering if you might want to grab a late lunch.”
“I would love that,” he nodded, “Give me a few minutes.”
“Sure,” she nodded, “I’ll be outside.”
He nodded, and went back to his paperwork, intending to finish it as quickly as possible. Things with Lindsay were good. And he hadn’t had good in a while. After things with Lisa blew up in his face, he needed something steady. And Lindsay was, if nothing else, steady. When she said she wanted to take things slow, he couldn’t have been happier than to oblige. Things with them had developed rather well after that, and he knew that this was probably the first time in a long time that he actually looked forward to having his significant other surprising him at work.
The click of heels stopped in front of his desk, and he looked up to see Jess standing over him, watching him with interest.
“Can I help you?” he asked, and Jess smirked.
“You know, I never thought I’d get a chance to say this.”
“Chance to say what, Rossi?” he asked, looking up at her and waiting for her reply.
“Badge bunny.”
