Stella stood outside the restaurant, waiting for Jim to arrive, barely awake. She had just worked some very long shifts catching a murderer in the past couple days, and she was very exhausted. She knew she should probably be home and going to sleep, but she had never been one to break a date and she didn’t want to start now. Besides, she really wanted to see Jim. They hadn’t had the chance to have dinner in a while, and she wanted to talk with him, without needing to talk about a case they were both involved in or anything related to the job at all. Just two people, having a nice, normal dinner conversation.

She felt his hand against the small of her back, and turned to give him a smile. He returned it, but not before giving her a slightly apprehensive look. “You alright? You look exhausted.”

“It’s been a long past couple days, that’s all,” she said slowly, “I’ll be fine. Besides, I want to be here.”

“You sure?” Jim asked, “Because if you want to go home and get some sleep, I won’t mind. You look like you’re asleep on your feet.”

“Jim, I’m fine really,” she said, and she started to sway slightly in front of him, and the frown on his face deepened, as he took her by the elbow, leading her towards the curb. “Where are we going?” she said, confused.

“I’m taking you home,” he replied, raising his hand in the air to call a cab.”

“Jim, don’t be ridiculous.”

“Seriously, Stella, you look like hell,” he sighed, “Don’t fight me on this. I’ll win.”

“Really, you don’t—” her voice trailed off, and she started to pitch forward, everything slowly slipping into black.

Stella woke up to find herself in a bedroom she didn’t recognize, and she didn’t remember how she had gotten there. She glanced around, searching for some sign of familiarity, something that would tell her where she was, and how she had gotten here. She picked up the scent of Chinese food coming from somewhere, and she felt the panic starting to rise again. Flashbacks echoed through her mind of coming to in her own apartment, the smell of Chinese food and the metallic scent of gunpowder mixed with blood hanging over her, Mac hovering over her, concerned. She spotted her purse sitting by the bed and she picked it up, feeling the edge of her glock through the material of the bag. She quickly scrambled back into her shoes before getting up, and opening the bedroom door.

She made her way into the kitchen, and she spotted a pair of broad shoulders going through a few paper bags sitting on the counter. She turned and saw the door behind her, and started to make her way out that way. She was almost out the door when she heard the voice sound behind her.

“Just gonna sneak out on me, Stella?”

She jumped about five feet in the air, before spinning around and seeing Jim standing behind her, an amused smirk on her face.

“Jim!” she gasped, “Jesus, you scared me.”

“Scared you?” he frowned, before his brain started to put two and two together. He knew the details of the situation with Frankie, and when he realized what he had done, “I’m sorry, Stella. I wasn’t even thinking when I ordered the Chinese food.”

“It’s alright,” she said, starting to relax visibly, “What happened? The last thing I remember, we were at the restaurant.”

“You practically passed out on me,” he replied, “So I took you somewhere where you could get some rest.”

“So why didn’t you take me home?” she said, confused.

“I would have,” he replied, “However, I don’t know where you live. And you were too out of it to give me a coherent address.” She blushed sheepishly, before cringing.

“Sorry about that,” she sighed, “I really thought I was going to make it through dinner.”

“You know, I wouldn’t have minded if you had cancelled on me because you wanted to go get some sleep,” he replied, “That is usually a valid excuse.”

“I really thought I was going to be fine,” she said, “Besides, I really wanted to spend the time with you.”

He paused at that, giving her a long look. “Really?”

“Really,” she said.

“Well,” he sighed, “It’s not too late. Dinner is still an option.” He glanced over at the bags, before nodding to the fridge, “There are other things besides Chinese if you don’t necessarily go for—”

“Are you kidding?” she said with a grin as she walked over to the bags and rustling through them, “I can’t resist the sesame chicken.” She pulled out the foil container of the chicken with vegetables and rice.

Jim shot her a look, “I’m suddenly glad I ordered two.”

She gave him a smile, before dropping a soft kiss against his cheek and he froze, it not being something he had expected, “Thanks for taking care of me, Jim.”

“Anytime, Stella,” he replied sincerely, “It’s what I’m here for.”
