He had to have been a masochist.

It was the only other explanation. Danny had to enjoy getting himself shot down all the time, because that was the only explanation as to why he was still flashing her that smirk every day, and slipping in completely obvious bids for drinks in between going over pieces of evidence, and listening to her tell him no every time, and not let it phase him at all. Stella didn’t understand it. Usually when a guy got shot down—he stopped. Danny just kept coming back for more. Maybe he figured he could eventually wear her down, maybe he liked feeling rejected, Stella didn’t know. But whatever the reason was, it was never fail for her to see the smirk on his face, and the not-so-subtle, “Maybe we could discuss this later over drinks” falling from his lips.

Then again, maybe he didn’t enjoy it as much as she had initially thought. Once Lindsay had come to town, and he had found someone who would actually flirt back, it had stopped. Not in it’s entirety. If they were working on a case together, the way they communicated didn’t change, just the flirting wasn’t as heavy and the requests weren’t as frequent. Stella had appreciated that, because things with Frankie were starting to settle in and she could do without Danny asking her out every day. Although, if she had told him about Frankie, he probably would have backed off, and given her the space she wanted, but then again, she didn’t need him pining after her either. She was glad that he had someone else to go after.

Then after the whole mess with Frankie, the flirting stopped entirely. He was giving her some space, making sure she wasn’t feeling uncomfortable. He was her friend first, and Stella appreciated that in more ways than he ever knew. As time passed and she started to heal, he would pick up on it and slowly they started to ease their way back into the way things used to be. By the time things between him and Lindsay blew out of control, they were practically back to where they had been before she came from Montana, and things felt normal again.

She never thought she would ever want Danny to shamelessly flirt with her the way he used to, let alone take it for a sign of normalcy. But she did. It let her know that things hadn’t changed between them. She had changed, and he had changed, but their friendship, their relationship, whatever it was he felt for her, that hadn’t changed. And she needed that feeling more than she ever knew. While at first it was him walking on eggshells not to say the wrong thing, she appreciated knowing that he cared. And was the first to let him know that things between them weren’t going to change. Danny was still her friend.

A good friend at that.

Stella knew that she needed more good friends in her life, more people she could trust. People she knew she could put that faith in were hard to come by, but she knew without a shadow of a doubt that Danny was one of them. They had worked together long enough, and knew each other well enough that Stella knew Danny had her back. And it didn’t hurt matters that he knew exactly what buttons to push to get her laughing, and she could do the same to get the telltale smirk on his face. They got each other, and Stella was more aware than she used to be in how rare that was to find.

And right now they were discussing something completely inconsequential, just sitting in the breakroom, enjoying each other’s company. Danny was talking about something that had happened to him over the course of his last case, and Stella was listening, occasionally voicing her opinion over the things that didn’t really matter, when both of their phones started to ring, indicating that they were being summoned back to work.

“Duty calls,” she sighed.

“So it does,” Danny replied, “Too bad. It was a good conversation.”

“That it was.”

“I’ve missed talking with you, Stella,” he admitted, and she gave him a confused look.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we haven’t really talked in a while. I missed that,” he said, and she gave him a long look.

“I’ve missed it too,” she replied, a small smile forming on her lips, which widened when the devil-may-care grin she had missed crossed his face.

“Well, maybe we could continue this little discussion over drinks later?”

A smirk crossed her lips and gave a slight shrug, “Maybe we will.”

She crossed the room and walked out the door, and Danny watched her as she went, before the grin on his face widened even further.

Flat-out no to maybe. Knew I’d wear her down eventually.

Okay, this was great. It wasn't the Mac/Lindsay fic that I was DYING for, but it was great. And the idea of Danny/Stella actually seems like it could work. Though not as much as Flack/Stella LOL But I can let Danny pinch-hit for one fic ;-)

Great work!

right now you're my hero. this was exactly what I needed right now.

Loved the story and how you made it work with the pairing I love, but know is slightly far fetched.

danny and stella isn't as farfetched as i originally believed it to be. it was still a bit of a challenge, but...it made sense.

i'm glad you liked it!

yes, flack is definitely the guy for stella. but danny's good for a bit of fun every once in a while.

Aw that was so cute! There's just something that needs to be said about the guy who continually chases out a girl despite hundreds of no's. I like that and I like this:)

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)

That was so cute! And totally in character for both of them. Danny's such a sneaky dog. And Stella's right, Danny totally has her back and that's why they are so awesome together.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-20 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
