“Hey, Adam.”

He looked up and she gave him a smile before leaning over, her elbows resting the counter. He tried not to stare. Tried, because the effort he was making was a really feeble one, and barely seemed like he was trying at all. There was just something about her that drove him up a wall, and he knew that she probably didn’t even realize what she was doing.

“Hey, Lindsay,” he said, returning the smile smile, “What can I do for you?”

“Got the trace back on the substance under Amanda Carrington’s nails?” she asked, starting to drum her nails against the table.

“I was just about to get started on it,” he nodded, “I’ll page you when I’m done.”

“That’s OK,” she replied, watching him as he got ready to process the samples, “I’ll wait.”

Adam looked up at her and blinked, “You will?”

“Yeah,” she sighed, “Is there a reason I shouldn’t?”

Because you’re too damn distracting. “Because—don’t you have evidence to process or something?”

Lindsay shook her head, “Nope. Mac said he was taking care of the other stuff, so I’m just waiting on trace.”

“OK,” he nodded. I’m screwed. “If you’re sure—”

“Positive,” Lindsay replied, before pulling up a chair and sitting down at the counter. She watched him as he went about processing the evidence.

They started to talk, light conversation, just to fill the silence. That’s what he liked the most about talking with Lindsay. They didn’t have to talk about anything important, but they did have to talk. Talking to Lindsay was one of the easiest things he ever had to do, once his got over his initial tripping over himself. He was comfortable around her, that was true. It was just that whenever she walked in, she came in totally out of the blue, and made him so damn nervous.

And he was also pretty sure she had a thing for Messer. Which pretty much shot his chances of things ever going anywhere with her to hell. Because, let’s face it, what chance did he stand against Danny Messer. But didn’t change the fact that Lindsay was the easiest friendship he’d found in a long time.

The results printed, and Lindsay reached out and snatched them off the printer tray before Adam could get to them. She gave him a smirk, and he shook his head with a laugh before looking over her shoulder at the results. He watched as her face relaxed, then furrowed into a look of concentration, like she had found evidence she couldn’t quite put into context.

“Terracotta,” she frowned, “I think there were terracotta pots at the scene.” She didn’t even look up as she started to walk, throwing a “thanks, Adam” back over her shoulder.

“You’re welcome?” he frowned, before shaking his head and starting to go back to his work. He was getting ready to start the next sample, when Lindsay poked her head back in.

“Hey, Adam. Wanna grab a bite after shift?”

Adam stammered at her for a second, before actually speaking, “—Sure.”

“Great,” she said, giving him a smile, “I’ll call you after I get off shift.”

“Sweet,” Adam nodded, watching her walk away from the lab, before blinking in confusion.

What just happened?
