“Live to the point of tears.” – Albert Camus.

When Stella knocked on the door to Sid’s apartment, she wasn’t sure what she was expecting. The way he talked sometimes, she wasn’t sure if she was going to walk into something out of the sixties, or something out of a sex shop. Sid had so many different facets to him that came out in different ways as she worked with him, it was hard to really pin down how he would furnish his apartment.

“Stella!” he said with a smile, “You’re just in time. I just took the steaks out.”

“Great,” she said, returning the smile before stepping inside. She glanced around for a second and was suddenly slightly let down. There was no crazy scheme to his apartment. Just your normal, everyday place.

“Expecting something different?” he said with a smirk.

“Maybe,” she admitted.

“Well, my ex-wife made me burn all of my hippie related items the week after we came back from the honeymoon,” he sighed, “Once we got divorced, I searched everywhere to try and find some of the stuff, but Christ, you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to track down tie-dye leather headbands.”

Stella laughed as she followed him into the kitchen. Steaming on the counter were too steaks that looked juicy enough to eat, and two empty wine glasses. Which reminded her—

“Oh! I brought the wine,” she said with a smile, producing the bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from her bag.

“Fantastic!” he said, taking the bottle from her, he put on his glasses briefly and studied the bottle before giving her a nod, “Good year.”

“That it was,” she said, as he handed the bottle back to her.

“If you’ll take the wine and the glasses, I’ll bring the steaks,” he replied, and as they collected their respective items, he gave her nod towards the door to her left, “To the table, Miss Bonasera.”

“Outside?” she frowned, and he nodded.

“There may not be a lot of room, but the view is spectacular, especially on a night like tonight,” he said with a smile, “You’ll see. Go, go!”

“OK,” she said with a smile, before stepping out the door, and seeing the expanse of stars that appeared in front of her, the smile faded into a look of awe. Even standing in the middle of Central Park you couldn’t get a view like this. “Wow,” was the only word she could manage to articulate.

“Yeah,” Sid nodded, placing the plates down on the table.

***

Conversation had wound down over the course of an evening, just like the food slowly disappeared, but it was good food and good conversation, so Stella didn’t mind the brief drop off into silence as they reached the end of a particular topic and searched for a new one. Sid was studying the skyline in front of them, and then turned to her with a soft smile.

“Have you ever wished upon a star, Stella?” he asked softly.

“When I was little, yes,” she nodded, “Every kid wishes on a star.”

“But recently, have you?”

She shook her head, “I think I lost faith in that a long time ago.”

He nodded, “I had this lover once—” He caught the look Stella was flashing him and gave her a smirk, “—don’t worry. It’s not going to the creepy place—” she laughed and he continued, “—anyway, she had a beautiful view. Similar to this one, except she lived in a more rural area, so you could see a lot more. Anyway, one night, we were staring up at this view, and she asked me the question I had asked you. I gave her a somewhat similar answer.”

“What did she say?” Stella asked, her focus shifting from the sky in front of her to the man next to her.

“She said that that’s the biggest tragedy of the human condition,” he said softly, “That they lose faith in something that simple because the events of life just break them down.” He turned back to her at this point, a kind of conviction in his eyes that she hadn’t seen before, “I mean, think back to when you were a kid. You wished your hardest on that star for your deepest hearts desires. When they actually came true, you felt like someone out there was on your side. That they were listening to you. You didn’t feel so alone.”

He looked away from her for a second, and gave a subtle shrug, “But then again, when your wish doesn’t come true, you’re twice as heartbroken.”

“I disagree,” she said, thinking back to the days when she would employ the same method, “If you believed in it strong enough, it gave you hope that someday, maybe things would go your way.

Sid turned to her briefly and gave her a nod, “I think you may be on to something there, Stella.”

She gave him a smile, “So what happened to that particular lover?”

He rolled his eyes, “I married her. I figured someone with that much philosophical insight is someone I needed to share my life with. Big mistake. At one point during our marriage, she—”

I really liked this, even though the idea of Sid/Stella still makes me feel ... creepy? Anyway, I thought Stella's reaction to Sid's apartment was great as was his reaction to her reaction. I loved the wishing on a star conversation, it was wonderful. Somehow it felt very Sid. Especially the ending! Priceless. I think you wrote Sid incredibly well.

sid/stella is the one sid pairing that doesn't make me feel creepy. probably because they have such an easy relationship as friends. everyone else (except for maybe hawkes) always seems somewhat uncomfortable around him.

and i adore sid. in all his quirks and kinks. so the idea that i wrote him well makes me incredibly happy, thank you.

Sid/Stella, huh? I wrote a Sid/Lindsay fic once, because Amrita and I were discussing that you can ship people on CSI:NY with pretty much anyone in fic because they all have great dynamic. It actually came out pretty good. Anyways. I really loved this. The way you wrote it made me think about them as a pairing, in fic and on the show. They do have an easy-going friendship, and in "Not What It Looks Like" they had a moment where Sid talked about his daughter -- was she murdered? I don't know. Now I see something there.

Damn you, you always do that to me! You write pairings and then I think about them. XD

muahahaha...it's my secret goal in life, to infect the world with my entirely random pairings.

but i'm glad you enjoyed it. i really had a lot of fun writing this one.
