Don/Stella - The Cop and the Fed

Fandom: CSI:NY/Numb3rs
Title: The Cop and the Fed
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Don Eppes/Stella Bonasera, implied Don Flack/Megan Reeves

Summary: After working a long cross-jurisdictional case, the CSIs and the FBI agents go out for some drinks.
Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] dragonessasmith for the [livejournal.com profile] pd_ficathon. I actually kinda like Don/Stella. Kinda.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of Numb3rs or CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.

They looked as though they needed a few beers, maybe a few shots, and a lot of sleep if they were going to be functioning in the morning. The case had been a long one, between the earlier frustrations over jurisdiction, the middle frustrations of getting Mac to actually take Charlie seriously, to the later frustrations over actually catching the guy, both the CSIs and the FBI agents were worn out and very much in need of a drink.

Flack who had suggested it, more to Megan than to the rest of them. He told Stella that they knew each other from a long time ago. From the way he said it, it seemed like there was more involved than he was letting on, and as much as he tried to deny it, he knew that Stella knew him better than that. He wanted some time alone with her, but the neither team was going to let him have his way. Most of them wound up going out for the night, and a few hours later all that was left were Flack, Don, Megan, and Stella. Don had challenged Stella to a game of pool a`nd they were across Sullivan’s from the other two, watching as Megan and Don talked about something, probably inconsequential, that they couldn’t hear from where they were standing, but Stella knew that both she and Don were watching the two as they talked.

“So—” Don said, looking up from the shot she was lining up, “—what do you think their story is?”

Stella glanced back over at them, before smirking slightly, “She spent some time in New York for something, had to cooperate with the boys in blue—he probably won her over with his wit and charm.”

“I detect a hint of sarcasm in that, Detective,” he grinned, taking his shot.

“Flack’s a good guy, don’t get me wrong,” Stella grinned back, watching the ball as it sank into the pocket, “But he’s—he’s too easy sometimes.”

“If he’s that easy, I’m surprised Megan didn’t see right through him.”

“He’s easy, but he’s good too,” Stella laughed.

“Ah, I gotcha,” he nodded.

“I have a feeling that you’re a bit of the same way.”

“Same way, how?” he asked, “Easy and good?”

“I was thinking just easy,” she smirked and he grinned back at her.

“Alright, alright,” he laughed, “I see how it is.”

“So what’s you’re story?” she asked, leaning on her pool cue.

“What’s my story?” he frowned, “How do you mean?”

“Single or taken, loner or social butterfly,” she said, “What’s your story?”

“That’s treading a bit into personal territory, don’t you think, Detective?”

“Well, we are off the clock—so technically you can call me Stella,” she sighed, “And we’ve been working rather closely for the past week, and I don’t know anything about you. I think that’s a bit—weird.”

“Well, Stella,” he said with a grin as he lined up a second shot, “I’m single. My father thinks I work too much to maintain a solid relationship.”

“Single workaholic who still talks to his father,” Stella smirked, “Every girl’s dream.”

Don laughed, missing his next shot. “Yeah, well—my brother is just as bad, except he still lives at home. So technically, I’m a step up.”

Stella grinned before leaning over to line up her shot. Don moved next to her, and watched her as took the shot, waited till it slipped into the pocket before speaking.

“So—what’s your story?”

“Me?” Stella shrugged, “Haven’t got much of one. Lived in the city my whole life, work in the crimelab, like to go shopping.”

He laughed, “What about your family? Parents, brothers, sisters—”

“You just spent the week working with them,” Stella sighed, “I was in foster care before that.”

“I’m sorry,” Don said softly.

“Don’t be,” Stella replied, “Apparently I’m one of the success stories.”

“I definitely can see that.”

She straightened and turned to face him, waiting for him to move out of her way, but when he didn’t, she smirked slightly and made her way around him, and he turned before speaking up again.

“What about a boyfriend?” he asked, heading out on a limb a bit.

“Not in the picture,” she sighed, “Hasn’t been for a while.”

“Didn’t think you were the workaholic type,” he said.

“I’m not,” she sighed, “Its just—not been in the cards.”

“Find that hard to believe,” Don replied.

“Oh, really,” she said, looking up from the shot she was lining up, “How’s that?”

He grinned, “I’m gonna withhold that information for self-defense reasons.”

She laughed, “That sounds like you’re flirting with me, Agent Eppes.”

“First of all, if I get to call you Stella, you can call me Don,” he said, “Second of all—is it a problem that I’m flirting with you. We are off the clock.”

“We are, aren’t we?” she grinned before taking the shot and watching it drop into the pocket.

Don watched her as she moved around the table again, and then glanced back over his shoulder to where Flack and Megan we’re sitting. Finding the table empty, he raised an eyebrow, “I think we’ve been abandoned.”

“Really?” Stella smirked, following his eyes, “I’ll give you two guesses what they’re doing.”

“See, you’re the only one who’s been focusing on them,” he said, “Everyone else has been looking at—other people.”

“Other people?” she frowned, “Like who?” He looked slightly uncomfortable, and her eyes widened, “Wait, us?”

“I’ve been told that we’ve been doing a lot of flirting.”

“Like what?”

He shrugged, “You got me. But if the fact that we’re flirting here is any indication—there might be something to it.”

“Maybe,” she sighed, leaning on her cue and resting one hand on her hip. She watched him as he glanced down at his watch, and his eyes widened slightly.

“Damn it’s late,” he sighed, “I have an early flight in the morning.”

“Should head back to your hotel,” she nodded, moving closer to him, “Get some sleep.”

“Yeah, I probably should,” he nodded.

“Where are you staying again?” she asked, walking towards the door with him.

“The Hyatt downtown,” he sighed, pushing the door open and letting her walk out a head of him.

Stella nodded, “You know, I’m heading in that direction.”

“Really?” he said with a small grin, “Are you?”

“Yeah,” Stella grinned, raising an eyebrow, “Maybe we should share a cab.”

“Maybe we should.”

The idea of Don/Stella really appeals to me for some reason. Great job.

Me too. I think they'd bounce off each other well. I'm glad you liked it.

You do realize you're probably going to end up writing them more often, right?

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-06-01 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Yeah, I know. And I want to write more Flack/Megan too. Oy.

Very nice! I like the idea of Don/Stella. I think they could both handle each other well.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-06-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. They could handle it not being serious for a while, and then it would slowly get there.

I'm glad you liked it.

*does the happy dance* Don/Stella for me! :D Loved it, and oh wow, Don/Stella. I loved it. And is it bad I kept going back to 'the middle frustrations of getting Mac to actually take Charlie seriously' and picturing Mac with the face that he has in my icon? ^^ Thank you so much!

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're very welcome. And yeah, that would most definitely be the look on Mac's face. I'm glad you liked it.

I'm glad you liked it.

Ooh very cute!! I feel like those two could really work. This was fantastic to read. :D
If you ever feel complied to write Flack/Megan, not implied like here, I'd love to read it! :)

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I actually did write Flack/Megan once (for the same friend, actually). If you're interested:
