Jess looked up from her desk as Flack ducked into the room and shut the door behind him. He then walked to the window and peered through the blinds back into the bullpen of the DA’s office. She gave him a strange look before actually speaking.
“Can I help you, Flack?”
He turned back to her for a minute, before shaking his head, “No.”
“Then what are you doing in my office?” she said, crossing her arms across her chest and following him to the door.
“I’m—uh—” he stammered and then her frown deepened in recognition.
“Don’t tell me you let Messer loose on the new girl,” she said, pushing him away from the door so that she could see.
“Hey—this was Peluso’s idea,” he said, holding up his hands in self-defense.
“Oh, so Peluso would tell you to jump off a bridge and you would do it to?” she asked, giving him a look.
“You didn’t mind so much when we were doing this to Desmond,” he replied, returning the look.
“Yeah, well—Desmond’s hazing was a practical joke,” Jess replied, “When it comes to the girls, Peluso screws with their feelings, and that’s not kosher.”
“You didn’t seem to mind so much when I did it to you,” Flack replied, and she gave him a warning look.
“You actually followed through with the date,” she sighed, turning back to the door, “Which was the biggest mistake of my life, by the way.”
“You weren’t saying that when we got back to your place,” he said with a smirk. She smacked him on the shoulder, hard, and he laughed. She peered back out through the door again, searching for any sign of Christina or Danny.
“Where is he?” she asked, and Flack joined her in peering through the door.
“I dunno,” he sighed, “He said he was going to wait for the right moment to make an entrance.”
“Does this make you feel good? Picking on some poor, innocent girl from the Midwest like this?”
“Honestly?” he asked with a completely straight face, and she nodded. “Yes,” he nodded, and she smacked him on the shoulder again before refocusing on what was going on outside.

Christina was floundering slightly at her desk, trying to get all the files together for Steele before they went into the meeting. Mike had been nice to her on the first couple of cases she had chaired with him, but Steele was another story. He seemed to hold her to a higher standard, almost, and if she wasn’t so frazzled to getting all the work done, she might have appreciated it a bit more. She picked everything up and started to bolt for the door when she felt herself collide with something and the papers go flying.
“Damnit,” she moaned, before dropping to her knees to pick them up again.
“Late for something?” a unfamiliar accent joked, and she looked up in surprise as someone crouched down across from her to help. She looked up and met the eyes of a blond haired man wearing glasses. He gave her a wide smile, and she returned it slightly before extending her hand to him, “I don’t think we’ve met. Christina Finn.”
“Danny Messer,” he replied, shaking her hand as his smile widened, “You know—Peluso doesn’t really do you justice.”
She willed herself the best she could not to blush, but it wasn’t really something she controlled that well, “Peluso was talking about me?”
“Yeah—but you’re twice as pretty as he was implying.”
She could feel her cheeks start to burn more as he helped her collect the rest of her paperwork. “Well, he hasn’t mentioned you at all, really. What end of the system do you work in?”
“Detective. I work with the crimelab,” he nodded as they both got to their feet, and he handed her the files.
“Well, thanks for the help,” she replied with a smile as she tried to get past him, “But I really have to go—”
“I’ll walk you out,” he replied, turning so that he was standing at her side.
“Thanks,” she sighed, feeling her cheeks start to burn again. He reached over and tapped the top folder in her hand.
“What case are you working?” he asked.
“Monica McKay,” she replied, “Her lawyer’s claiming that she had a temporary moment of insanity over her love for the victim that she killed him when he said he was going to leave her.”
“That’s pretty weak.”
“Yeah, well—that’s the defense.”
“Things people say they do in the name of love,” Danny shook his head, “Kinda sad, isn’t it?”
“Yeah,” she nodded, when they finally reached the meeting room where Christina was going. She placed her handle on the door, and he caught her hand for a minute, bringing her eyes to his.
“Look—it’s kinda customary for me to take the new ADA’s out for a beer so we can get to know each other better, start to develop a good working relationship, ya know?”
“Oh,” she said, slightly surprised, “Umm—sure, I guess. Just, uh—give me a call here at work.”
“Well, I was wondering if tonight would work for you?”
“Tonight? Well, uh—”
“It’s not a big thing, just two colleagues going for a beer after work.”
“Right, it’s nothing.”
“Right.”
“So, tonight?” she said, thinking about it for a minute, “Tonight’s fine.”
“Great. I’ll meet you here, then?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Great,” he nodded with a smile, before heading back into the office, and Christina just watched him go, frowning slightly.
“What the hell was that?” she whispered to herself as she let herself in the meeting room.
