Dear Mr. Potter,
You are cordially invited to the Annual New York City Justice Team’s All Hallowed Eve’s Ball. Please note that the theme this year is couples, so you are required to bring the date of your choosing, and were a costume in accordance with that theme.
Potter stared down at the invitation in front of him, and blinked in disbelief. A costume party? Since when does the city of New York hold an event without a black tie involved? And he had to bring a date? Oh, Lord.
“Hey, Jess?” he said, looking across his office to the desk where Jess was sitting, head
over the file in front of her. She looked up at him and gave him a small smile.
“What can I do for you, Potter?”
“You get the invitation to this costume party thing?” he asked.
She nodded, “Yeah—sounds like a good time.”
“Yeah, I guess,” he nodded slowly, and her head went back down to the file. He hesitated for a minute, before speaking up again.
“So—you going with anyone yet?”
“Sorry, Nick,” Jess sighed, “Flack’s already asked. Besides, you have to go with a cop.”
“What?” he frowned looking back down at the invitation.
Please note that if you are attending with a date, it is encouraged be from some other branch of the justice system other than your own. This is a team building exercise, hoping to improve relations here in the city, and make the justice system a more efficient machine.
“It says encouraged, not mandatory,” he replied.
“If they took the time to write it down, it is mandatory.”
“You gotta be kidding me?” he sighed, “Is this a joke?”
“Nope.”
“Is this normal?”
“Yeah,” Jess nodded, “They have these quite a bit, actually. Trying to improve morale or something like that.”
“What if you’re married?”
“Then you’re excused,” Jess replied, “This is mostly for the single people who might be scrounging around for a date.”
“Damn,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair, and checking his watch. He was off the clock, so he figured now must be as good a time as any, “Guess I better head over to the precinct.”
Jess smirked at him as he got up and reached for his suit jacket, “Good luck, Potter.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Nick shook his head, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Nick found Lindsay standing over her desk, going over some case report. He knocked lightly on the doorframe to the office she and Danny shared, and she looked up and gave him a smile, “What can I do for you, Potter?”
“Didya get the invitation for that big party the mayor’s throwing?” he asked, holding up the piece of paper in his hand.
“Yeah,” she nodded, “Sounds like fun, right?”
“Definitely,” he sighed, “Well—I was wondering if you had anyone to go with?”
Lindsay looked up and frowned slightly, “Oh, I’m sorry. Peluso already asked.”
“Peluso,” he said, nodding slowly, “Really?”
“Yeah,” she sighed, “Well—we’ve kinda been seeing each other for a while. It was a bit of a given.”
“Oh,” Nick nodded, “Well—thanks anyway.”
Lindsay gave him a sympathetic smile as he pulled away from the door and turned back into the busy precinct. He spotted Billy chatting up Maka, Stella scared him too much for him to seriously consider asking her, so all that really left was—Angell. Oh, man. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Angell—it was that he really liked Angell. He saw her sitting at her desk, working on her computer, and slowly made his way over.
I’mgonnadieI’mgonnadieI’mgonnadieI’mgonnadie.
“Hey, Angell.”
She looked up in surprise at her name, “Hey, Potter.”
“You got that invitation for the mayor’s thing?”
“What, the Halloween thing?” Angell shrugged, “Yeah, I was planning on blowing it off. Why?”
Damnit. “Oh. Yeah, me too. Waste of time, right?”
“Yeah,” she said before looking up at him, a small smirk on her face, “You weren’t looking to ask me, were you, Potter?”
“Well, no—not exactly—I mean, you’re the only one who doesn’t have a date, so I was wondering if you might want to go.”
“Uh-huh.”
“But since you’re not gonna go—guess I won’t either. You’re right. Waste of time.” He started to walk away, feeling his cheeks start to burn.
“Hey, Potter wait!” she sighed, and he turned around to face her again.
“Yeah?”
“If you really need a date, I’ll go with you,” she sighed.
“Really?” he said, his eyebrows shooting into his hair.
“Really,” she nodded, “But I get to pick the costumes.”
“Deal!” he grinned, “I suck at that kinda thing anyway.”
“Cool,” she nodded, “So I’ll call you later this week?”
“Yeah, sure,” Nick nodded, “Just drop me a line—whenever.”
“I will,” she replied with a smile, before going back to the computer, signaling the end of the conversation. Nick turned away from her desk, a giant grin on his face.
Psh. I wasn’t worried.
