Flack/Stella - Last Dance

teeheehee...i like this one.

also, this is to somewhat make-up for my killing of danny earlier. there will be more danny-centric fluff coming later. and then lots and lots more fluffiness, until i can get myself out of this rut.

Fandom: CSI:NY
Title: Last Dance
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Pairing Don Flack/Stella Bonasera
[livejournal.com profile] alphabetasoup Prompt: A is for Amused
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: Flack and Stella run into one of Stella's ex-boyfriends at a function.
Author's Note: Also used the prompt Don Flack, Jr. / Stella Bonasera / appreciated gesture. OK, this is pure and unadulterated fluff. Might be too fluffy, but after the angst rut I've been in lately (I blame "Bang of the Gavel") I feel that nothing could be too fluffy.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.

Don’t forget who’s taking you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darling, save the last dance for me

- “Save the Last Dance For Me” – Michael Bublé

Don and Stella were sitting at one of the fringe tables, a walk away from the dance floor. It was where the entire team had been placed there, but the rest of them were off in other directions, talking, mingling, but the two of them were taking some time to themselves. It was no secret what was going on between them now, but they still got barely any time alone. Occasionally he would lean forward and whisper in her ear over the music, and she would whisper back, but they were mostly just content to sit and watch the dancers on the floor, and enjoy each other’s company.

He had caught her up in a conversation that had lasted a while, but they both looked up when a shadow fell over them. “Detective Bonasera,” the shadow said, “Is it possible that you haven’t changed a bit since college?”

“Doctor Carp,” she said with a grin, “It may be, because you haven’t either.” The man was a good looking one, wearing what looked like a very expensive suit. Don gave him a once over, and Stella noticed, before continuing, “Don, this is Michael Carp, and old friend of mine from college. Michael, this is Detective Don Flack. We work together.”

The Detective Flack?” the man began as he extended his hand to Don, “The Captain’s son?”

“That would be me,” Don admitted slowly.

“He’s quite an impressive man, your father,” Michael said with a nod, and Don shrugged.

“That’s what they tell me,” he replied. He preferred not to talk about his father when he was on the job. That wasn’t the image of his father that he liked to live with.

Michael gave the man a smirk before a somewhat upbeat song started playing over the speakers and a smile crossed his face. “They’re playing our song, Stella.” She listened for a second.

“So they are,” she sighed.

“You two have a song?” Don smirked, “That’s cute. Were you college sweethearts or something?” Stella gave him a playful swat, and gave him a smile.

“Yes, we dated in college.” The smirk on Don’s face only widened, and Michael looked somewhat confused for a second, before shaking it off, and extending his hand to the woman.

“A dance, Stella?” he asked, “For posterity’s sake.” She turned back to Don.

“Do you mind?”

“Not at all,” he replied, “Have fun.”

“OK,” she said with a smile, and as Michael turned his back to lead him towards the dance floor and shot her boyfriend a dirty look. Which basically said ‘stop being amused by this whole thing and become the over protective boyfriend I know you are.’

He glanced around briefly, trying to figure out how to save Stella from a fate that he put her in.

“That was polite of you,” Michael commented.

“I wasn’t being polite,” Stella replied gruffly, “I’m with him.”

“He’s your date?”

“He’s my boyfriend.”

Michael choked on a laugh, “That’s your boyfriend?”

“Yup,” Stella replied with a smile, “What’s the matter? He not up to standard.”

“Come now, Stella,” he sighed, “He’s a little more than rough around the edges.”

“But I like those edges,” she replied, “And he accepts mine, no questions asked.”

Michael grimaced, “You used to have such sophisticated taste. It is a shame.”

“I don’t think so,” she replied as he spun her around in time to the music. When his arm returned to her waist, it slid a little lower than it should have, and she shot him a glare as she yanked it back up to her waist.

Michael tilted his head to the side in mock-amusement, “What? It slipped.”

“Slipped, my ass,” she bit back, and he feigned a look of hurt. She glanced around the room, and back to the table where Don had been sitting, and he wasn’t there anymore. She glanced back to the dance floor around her, and spotted him dancing with Angell over to the side, but his eyes were trained on her. The look on his face clearly said ‘asshole’s gonna lose and arm if it slips again.’

Stella figured that Angell must have been in on it, because she didn’t seem annoyed by the man’s lack of attention. The other couple moved closer, and when Michael spun Stella again he was surprised when it wasn’t the same woman that spun back to him.

“Even think about putting your hand on my ass, and I’ll rip it off,” Angell said sweetly, and Michael looked over to where Stella was now dancing with Don. Annoyed, he let Angell go, and sulked off the dance floor. She wasn’t left alone long, however, and she was quickly scooped up by Hawkes with a spin, and Don gave them a smile.

“Thanks for letting me borrow her, Hawkes.”

“Anytime,” Hawkes replied, before the other couple disappeared into the crowd of people around them.

“Sorry bout that,” Don whispered to her, “If I had known he was the asshole college ex-boyfriend, I wouldn’t have said yes.”

“That’s alright,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck as he pulled her closer. The beat of the music had changed and they were swaying to a much slower song. “Just next time, remember. The answer’s always no.”

He smirked, “I’ll remember.”

“Last dance, ladies and gents. Hope you’ve saved it for that special someone.”

Stella brushed a quick kiss against his cheek, as they continued to sway to the music, resting her head against his shoulder as the lights dimmed around them.
