It was just one of those days. One of those days where you didn’t want to do anything but lay in bed, and just be lazy. Stella rolled over slowly, and stared out the window at the rain pouring down the windows. She let out a groan and rolled over into the chest of the man sleeping next to her.
He mumbled in his sleep about the British coming, and something that sounded like “Mommy, I don’t wanna go fly kites” before settling back into silence. Stella stifled a giggle before glancing around the room. Things with Don were definitely—different. He was fun, and easy to talk to, and she enjoyed his company. Among other things.
She knew that he wasn’t going to be up for a while, and she was too lazy to actually get up and start the day, so she fumbled around on the bedside table for where he had dropped the newspaper the night before. She flipped through until she found the cross word puzzle, and started to work on it, Don’s sleeping body rolled into hers, an arm sliding across her waist.
“What are you doing?” he murmured in her ear, not bothering to open his eyes.
“A crossword puzzle,” she replied, “What’s a nine letters for an ancient Arthurian relic?”
“One word or two?”
“One.”
“Excalibur.”
Stella cocked her head to the side before filling in the letters and was surprised when it fit.
“How did you know that?”
“I watched Monty Python,” he replied before opening his eyes and giving her a smile, “It’s too early to be doing a crossword puzzle.”
“It’s quarter to ten in the morning,” she replied.
“Yeah, too early.”
“You would waste a perfectly good day off in bed,” she said, forgetting the crossword puzzle and rolling over to face him.
“Well, it’s raining,” he replied, “So we don’t want to go outside. We’re already naked, why ruin it by actually getting out of bed?”
Stella rolled her eyes but the smile was still on her face, “You’re such a kid.”
“And?” he frowned, “I thought you liked this kid.”
“I do,” she whispered, “But you are.” He leaned in to kiss her, and it was the first time she actually questioned what she was doing. She knew that it was only supposed to be fun for her, but she was beginning to think that Don was beginning to get too attached. And she had a feeling that she was too. And that wasn’t the way to go.
Because she and Don weren’t going anywhere, really.
RING!
“No!” Don groaned, rolling off her as she went to answer her cell phone.
“Bonasera,” she said into the speaker, “Yeah?—OK—OK—I’ll be right there, Mac.” She hung up the phone, and gave him an apologetic look, “Duty calls.”
“Uh-huh,” Don replied, watching her as she got dressed next to him. She was getting ready to head out the door, when he grabbed her wrist, pulling her back in, “Hey. Maybe we’ll get together later.”
“Yeah,” she nodded, giving him a quick kiss, “I’ll call you.”
Don watched her walk out the door, before rolling over to lie on his back. “Oh yeah. I screwed up.”
