Occasionally, she watched him.

It wasn’t really anything major. She would catch him, standing with Aiden outside the room, watch them talk, probably about a case but her mind always turned it into something more, the downside of not being able to hear exactly what they were saying. She would watch as Aiden laughed at his stupid jokes and flirted with him on a pretty consistent basis. And she had to bite back the urge to tell Aiden to back off her man. Because he wasn’t her man. Not anymore.

It was a brief, fleeting relapse of nostalgia. A quick moment where she wished she could have him back again, and be the one he looked at like that, and the he was making laugh, and have all those moments that they used to share back again. Brief, fleeting, usually ended by a—

“Stell?” Danny interrupted, calling her attention back to him and back to the case at hand.

“Sorry,” she said with a smile, “Zoned out there for a second.”

“Uh-huh,” Danny nodded, glancing between the two standing outside the glass and the woman standing next to him. He then took a breath and repeated what he had been saying to her about the evidence, something she needed to pay attention to, but couldn’t. Her focus was already shot, and she couldn’t let the man on the other side of the glass know that she was watching him, especially when she was who was spending half the time pretending that what they had never happened at all.

But if she didn’t know any better, she could sweat that those familiar set of eyes were resting on her now.

“Stella!” Danny’s voice carried outside the precinct as he jogged to catch up with her. Danny had been around longer than Aiden had, who was relatively new, but he was still the new kid on the block. But that didn’t mean he didn’t pick up on things, and one of them was definitely the fact that there was something going on between Stella and Flack.

Ever since Aiden had started working there, Stella’s attention span had become less and less whenever Flack was involved. And Danny wanted to know what was up. He wasn’t about to tell anyone; he just liked knowing what made his co-workers tick.

“What’s up, Danny?” Stella asked, turning around to face him, finding the situation old and new, all at the same time. She remembered it slightly differently, from a few years earlier. There was a taller detective, and the question was different, but it was still somewhat the same.

“You and Flack,” he began slowly, glancing around to make sure no one was around, “There something going on there?”

“Used to be,” Stella replied quickly, “A long time ago.”

“Oh,” Danny sighed, “I’m not going to tell anyone, I just—don’t wanna step on any toes, ya know?”

“Definitely,” Stella replied, “But no. There’s nothing between me and Flack anymore. We ended that a while ago.” She hesitated for a moment, the voice in her head berating her for being a liar. “Anything else?”

“Nah,” Danny shrugged, “That’s it. G’night.”

“Night, Danny,” Stella replied as she walked away, “See you tomorrow.”
