Anna watched him out of the corner of her eye as Noah and Gina settled in. They were staying in the room not too far from where Anna’s room was, and sitting on her bed, she could see right into the open doorway of theirs. There wasn’t anything interesting going on, just them unpacking—she had a feeling if anything interesting was going on, they would shut the door—but she was content to watch anyway. Watching him was more fun than things she could have been doing.

She was trying to figure him out. She knew he was staying because of something with her but she wasn’t quite sure what that was. She figured watching him might give her a better idea, but truth be told it was only making her more confused. They seemed like just a normal pair of hunters, settling in for the night and getting ready to move on tomorrow. So why were they planning to stay for more than a night, and why was he so interested in talking to her?

She saw him glance her way, and she didn’t look away. She wasn’t ashamed of her curiosity, never had been, and she just met his gaze defiantly. That was when she first felt it. The fingertips that seemed like they were crawling on the edge of her vision, the pulling sensation that something that wasn’t supposed to be there was trying to get inside. She blinked, and then clamped down on whatever they were, shutting down and tuning out, and that was when she saw Noah recoil in shock, almost as though he had been physically shoved. That was when things started to click for her, and she grinned slightly, before getting up walking towards the door way. She continued to look directly at him, giving him a smirk and a slight eyebrow raise, before slamming the door closed in front of him.

He was going to have to do better than that.

The next time she saw him again was downstairs for breakfast. She was coming in later than everyone else, and she quickly made a plate of whatever was left that Mama had cooked, before sitting down across from him.

“So—how do you do it?”

“Do what?” he asked. He was pretending not to know what she was talking about, and she didn’t find it amusing. She wasn’t going to drop this. She had met mind readers before, and she didn’t like the way it felt like they were invading her brain. She crossed her arms in front of her chest.

“Don’t play dumb with me. You know what I mean.”

He sighed. “I’m a telepath. Going into people’s heads just kind of happens.”

“Can you control it?”

“For the most part, yeah,” he nodded, and she nodded with him for a moment before speaking again.

“Good. Stay the hell out of my head.”

“Anna—” he began, watching her get up and start to walk away. “—I can help!”

“My mind is a really scary place, Noah,” Anna replied, turning back to face him. “You don’t know what you’re getting into.”

“Yeah, but I can help you find out why,” he sighed, trying to get her to listen. She rolled her eyes, and gave him a look.

“Do you get off on stuff like this or something? Does it turn you on to get in people’s heads?”

“Really, Anna,” he said softly. “I can.”

She shook her head again before walking away. “Forget it.”

It was a few weeks later that Noah was finally able to talk her down, convincing her in his own way that, if nothing else, it wouldn’t hurt. She appraised him carefully with each move he was making as he set up the room. When he finally gestured for her to sit on the couch and sat down across from her, she sighed heavily. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Are you sure you wanna do this?” he asked, giving her an uneasy look, and she smirked.

“I should be asking you that,” she replied. “You’re the one who’s been pushing me to do this for the past three weeks.”

“Well—just making sure you aren’t giving in just because I’ve been badgering you.”

“I’m not,” she sighed, giving him a look. “Let’s get this over with, OK?”

“OK,” he nodded, shifting his position in the chair. “Alright. Just look at me, and relax.”

She met his eyes again, and felt the fingers start to crawl in, and fought the urge to clamp down and shut him out, leaning back into the couch and just letting him inside, wondering if he’d still be interested in what he saw.
