Professor Charles Eppes was definitely a surprise. When she was asked to attend a banquet at Princeton for the award ceremony, she was expecting someone older, more distinguished. Instead, she met someone who was from her generation and that was something she wasn’t expecting. They had had a lovely conversation over the dinner, and it was nice to talk to a peer who wasn’t treating her like an idiot, or constantly flirting with her. It was a meeting of intellectual equals that she hadn’t had the chance to experience in a long time.

Coming back to work after the high of that dinner was like coming down from ecstasy—except twenty times harder and instead of an embarrassing hazy memory of Chase and a hangover, she had very clear and pleasant memory of an engaging conversation with Professor Eppes, and an annoyed attitude about having to deal with the Three Stooges.

She spent the morning trying to get through the case they had just been handed, and once House sent them out to run tests on the patients so she could have some time to herself. She was silently wishing for someone to come and save her, when she heard a voice behind her.

“Allison!”

She didn’t even place the name at first—people didn’t usually call her ‘Allison’ within the walls of the hospital—and the voice was definitely the one furthest from her mind. She stopped confused, and then the voice came again.

“Allison! Doctor—Doctor Cameron!”

She turned, confused, and when she saw who it was, her face lit up with a smile, “Professor Eppes!”

Charlie smiled at her, before placing a hand on her arm, “I was hoping I’d be able to catch up with you.”

“What a surprise!” she said, moving closer to him. “What are you doing here?”

“I was wondering—” Charlie began, “—if you weren’t too busy, of course—if you wanted to maybe grab lunch.”

Cameron hesitated a minute, before frowning, “I would, but we just caught a case, and—”

“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “I expected you to be busy; it’s not a big deal.” Charlie started to walk away, and she spoke up behind him as he left.

“But I’ll probably be free for dinner!”

She watched him as he turned around, her fingers playing idly with the file in her hand. He gave her a wide smile before nodding, “Dinner would be perfect.”

A bright smile flashed across her face again, before nodding, “Great. Meet me here—around eight?”

“I’ll be there,” Charlie nodded, before disappearing back down the hallway. She turned and continued to head back to the patient, the smile still on her face. This day was starting to look up.

“Not that I’m complaining—but isn’t it usually the guy who walks the girl to the door?” Charlie said with an amused smile as he and Cameron walked into the lobby of his hotel. Cameron just smirked slightly.

“It’s the twenty first century, Charlie. Walking the date to the door is considered an equal opportunity thing.”

He laughed softly, “Good to know.” He glanced around the lobby for a minute, before turning back to her. “I guess this is where I get off.” Cameron nodded slowly, until she felt his hand on her arm again. “I had a really good time tonight, Allison.”

“So did I,” she said, giving him a small smile. She watched as he leaned in to kiss her cheek, and then turned her head slightly, catching his lips in hers for a brief, soft, kiss. When she pulled back, Charlie just looked at her in shock, and she smile softly. “Good night, Professor Eppes.”

“Good night, Doctor Cameron,” he said, watching her as she turned and walked back out of the lobby.
