“Why did we have to come to this thing?” Stella mumbled, resting her head on Nick’s shoulder as they listened to the keynote speaker begin his talk. They were attending a conference dinner for the police department and labs across the country, and each department was required to send one homicide detective and one CSI to Vegas for the dinner, and for Vegas they had sent Nick and Stella.

“Because they told us to?” Nick replied, and she gave him a look.

“Why us?” she said.

“Probably because the department wanted to save the money of paying for an extra two chairs if the CSI and homicide detective wanted to bring a date?” he mused, and she sighed.

“Cheap bastards.”

“Amen to that,” he chuckled. His eyes wandered back up to the speaker, “You know who they’re sending from New York?”

“Nope,” she sighed, “Mac wouldn’t tell me. But since they’re about as cheap as Vegas is, they’re probably going to send Angell and Hawkes.”

“Those two are together?” Nick frowned.

“They deny it, but I think I know better,” Stella replied with a smirk, “Besides, even if they weren’t, I don’t think they’d have a date to bring.”

“Ah,” Nick nodded, before they turned their attention fully to the speech being given. When it was finished, the lights went up, and the various members of law enforcement were allowed to mix and mingle. Stella and Nick were chatting with a group of detectives from another state when she heard a familiar voice from behind her.

“Hey, Stell!”

She turned around, searching for the source of the voice, and noticed the tall man waving her down. She returned his smile, before grabbing Nick’s hand and pulling him in the direction of the bar.

“How ya doin,’ Flack?” she said as he pulled her into a hug.

“Good,” he nodded, “How ‘bout yourself?” he said with a smile, “Enjoying your new life out in Vegas?”

“As much as I can,” she sighed, “There’s a few things I miss, but—the perks kinda make up for it.”

He nodded, before turning to the woman next to him, “You remember Calleigh, right?”

“Calleigh Duquense,” the woman clarified, extending her hand to Stella.

“Stella Bonasera—you’re the CSI from Miami, right?”

Calleigh gave her a wide smile and nodded, “That’s me. I’m working in New York now, though—just seemed to make things easier.”

Stella nodded, “This is Nick Stokes—he works as a CSI in Vegas.”

“Nice to actually see you face-to-face,” Nick said with a smile. Calleigh’s eyes lit up in recognition.

“We spoke on the phone for that other case.”

Nick nodded in agreement, before taking her elbow lightly. “Let’s talk over here so those two can catch up.”

Calleigh nodded and Stella gave Nick an appreciative smile as he and Calleigh moved further down the bar. Stella then turned back to Flack, moving to the side so they could both slide up onto a bar stool.

“Alright,” she sighed, “Tell me everything. And if you leave something out, I’ll have to hurt you.”

It was about an hour later before the sound of Calleigh’s laugh filtered through their conversation. Stella and Flack both turned to see Nick and Calleigh very involved in a conversation. Flack raised an eyebrow slightly, before turning back to Stella, “He’s flirting with her, isn’t he?”

“He’s not flirting,” Stella replied with a smile, “That’s just how he is.”

“Oh,” Flack said, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

“Don’t worry about it,” Stella shook her head, “He’s coming home with me.”

“Worry about what?” he frowned.

“I know you, Flack,” she sighed, “He’s making you nervous.”

“He’s not making me nervous.”

“Well, you’re at least a little jealous.”

“Stella—stop it. You know nothing about my relationship with Calleigh.”

“Because you won’t talk about it.”

“I have my reasons.”

“I’m going to find out eventually,” Stella replied, “If not from you than from someone else.”

He shrugged with a slight yawn, looking down at his watch, “Me and Calleigh better start heading in. We’re still on New York time.”

“It was good seeing you, Flack,” she said softly, giving him a small hug.

“Good seeing you too,” he nodded, before walking back over to the other two. He leaned over to whisper something in her ear, and she turned to him with a smile, before saying goodbye to Nick and letting Flack lead her towards the door. Nick headed back to where Stella was standing, and slid his arms around her waist.

“He tell you want you wanted to know?”

“Everything except the full story on him and her.”

“He’ll tell you when he’s ready,” Nick replied.

“Or someone else will,” she smirked, and he laughed.

“So—do you miss it more than you did before?” he asked, moving from behind her and starting to lead her out the door.

“Not really,” she shook her head, “I’m pretty happy right where I am.”
