“Hey, Mac—can we talk to you for a minute?”
Mac looked up and saw Stella standing in the doorway of his office, and Danny was with her. He nodded before motioning for them to come in and shut the door. “What’s this about?”
“You know how the option was coming up for a temporary transfer with Vegas?” Stella began and Mac nodded. “Well—Danny was looking to take it.”
Mac frowned in surprise, “Really?”
“Yeah—I was gonna switch with Stokes, and head out there, see what it was like,” Danny shrugged, “Figure it might be nice for a little change of scenery.”
“I don’t think Vegas is going to like losing a CSI for a homicide detective, Danny,” Mac began, and they both nodded his agreement.
“We thought of that,” Stella nodded, “That’s why we thought—if Sofia was willing—that they wouldn’t mind switching a homicide detective for a homicide detective.”
Mac looked at them both for a minute, confused. He had heard that there was something going on between Danny and Sofia, and if Danny was going to Vegas while Sofia came here, that just seemed to be defeating the purpose. But then Danny and Stella exchanged a look, and it clicked. Danny wasn’t leaving. Stella was.
“Stella—”
“Mac, I need this,” Stella sighed, “I know we’ve been working together for a long time, but—I need a change.”
Mac was about to protest, but the look on her face told him that she had thought this through, and wasn’t about to change her mind. He understood that this was what she needed, and he also knew that there was no way he was going to be able to stop her, at least not by telling her she couldn’t.
“I understand that,” he nodded, “But now it seems like I’m getting the short end of the stick, because I’m losing a CSI.”
“Actually, you’re not,” Stella said with a smile, “Sofia was actually a CSI before she became a homicide detective. So you’re still getting a CSI detective.”
Mac paused again, and placed the file he had been looking at back down on his desk, “And Detective Curtis said she was willing to do this?”
“She said she’s been looking to get out of Vegas for a while,” Danny nodded, “And she definitely wants to get back to being a CSI.”
Mac nodded slowly, “If this is what you want, Stella—”
“It is,” she nodded, before getting up with Danny as they got ready to leave, “Thanks, Mac.” He watched as Danny disappeared out the door, and then spoke up again, just as Stella was about to leave.
“Stella—one more thing,” he said, and she turned back to him. He gestured for her to sit again, and took a deep breath before speaking again, “Are you sure this is what you want? To uproot your entire life and move out to Vegas?”
“It’s what I want, Mac,” she nodded, “Really. After what’s happened this year—I really just need some space from the city.”
He nodded, “I’m going to miss you, Stella.”
She smiled slightly, “I’m gonna miss you too. But it is only temporary. If I really don’t like Vegas—I could always come back.”
“I guess I’ll have to look forward to that then,” Mac nodded. She gave him a small smile and a quick kiss on the cheek before heading out of the office again.

“Are you really sure this is what you want, Stella?” Nick’s voice echoed back at her from the speaker phone on her desk, and she grinned.
“Why does everyone keep asking me that?”
“Well, it’s a bit of a big decision for someone of your—character.”
“Were you about imply that I’m too old to be moving to Vegas, Mr. Stokes?” she smirked, and she could hear the grin on his face in his voice.
“Not at all, Detective. I don’t know why anyone would do such a thing.”
“That’s what I thought,” she laughed.
“I’m just thinking that you’ve been in New York your whole life, Stell,” he said, “Are you sure that you want to just pick up and leave like that?”
“I just need a little change, Nick,” she sighed, “And you didn’t seem so concerned when it was Danny coming your way.”
“Yeah, well—I’m not as interested in Danny’s feelings as I am in yours.”
Stella paused for a minute, before speaking, “Do you think you’re pressuring me?”
“Not exactly—” he began, “I just think that—I might be part of the reason, and I don’t want you to base such a large decision solely on what we’ve got going on here.”
“So you don’t like what we’ve got going on here?” she replied.
“I didn’t say that,” Nick replied, “I just don’t think we’re that serious where you should pick up your life, move out here, and start going to work with a group of total strangers for six months just for me.”
“They’re not total strangers, Nicky—”
“That’s not what I meant, Stella,” he sighed, “I just want this to be more for you than it is for me. If I wasn’t in the picture, and this transfer came up, would you still take it—just for you?”
“I don’t know,” she replied, running a hand through her hair, “I don’t know if I would. I know that I need to get out of the city—I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Whatever’s going on between you and me—it just kinda tipped the scale.”
“I see,” he nodded.
“Feel better?” she asked with a smile, and he laughed.
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Good,” she nodded, “So I guess I’ll be seeing you soon.”
“Guess so.”
