Characters Don Flack/Stella Bonasera, Mac Taylor, Jen the Lab Tech (OC)
alphabetasoup Prompt: Z is for Zealous

Summary: Flack tries a little too hard to stay one step ahead of Mac.
Author's Note: Also used the prompt Don Flack, Jr. / Stella Bonasera / here first. I refuse to give Jen the Lab Tech a last name. Or a general description. She's just kinda there. She also appeared in Bad Ties. Also--I rather enjoyed this piece.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.
He spotted her coming out of the lab at the exact same time she spotted him.
He knew that they both wanted to give Mac the same information. He knew that whoever got their first would get the brownie points for figuring it out first. And he also knew what he was about to do was so absolutely childish, but he really didn’t care. He was tired of the CSIs feeding Mac the information so that he was always a step behind. This time he had a very clear opportunity to be on top, and he was going to take advantage of it.
He started to pick up his pace slightly, and she noticed a slight smirk crossing her lips. She didn’t know what he was up to quite yet, but she widened her stride slightly to keep up with him. He picked up the pace even more, using his longer legs to his advantage, and that was when Stella followed the path he was following directly to Mac. A look of realization crossed her face, and she started to move a bit faster, until it was almost like she was jogging. She was halfway down the hallway, when she was suddenly intercepted by Maka, trying to ask her a question about something. He didn’t care what, but he was going to kiss Maka later for being there when she was. He picked up the pace even more, and he was just behind Mac when—
“Flack! Look out for the—” One of the tech’s voices was cut off when he was suddenly falling, stars exploding in front of his vision as his head hit the floor.
“Oh my God, I killed Flack!” Jen crouched down in front of him waving her hands in front of his eyes. “Speak to me, dude! How many fingers am I holding up? Do you know where you are? Damnit, say something!”
“Everything alright, Jen?” Mac’s voice came from above them, and suddenly Mac’s face filled his vision.
“I spilled something—messy—earlier, and I had just finished mopping it up,” Jen replied, “Flack slipped on the wet floor.”
“You alright there, Flack?” Mac asked, and Flack gave an incoherent mumble before Stella’s curly head appeared over his face, wearing a giant smirk.
“Gotta watch where you’re going, Flack.”
I hate you.
Mac recruited Hawkes and Danny to get him to the breakroom couch once he could sit up, and Jen got ice for his head. He watched as Stella gave Mac his scoop for the case, and glared at her when she walked in the room. She shut the door behind him and gave him a look.
“A little overzealous there, dontcha think?”
“That was my scoop.”
“Well, according to Mac it was mine. And if you had just been paying attention to where you were going instead of me, and how fast I was going, you would have seen the wet floor signs, and it would have been.”
“Don’t use logic on me,” he pouted, “My head hurts.”
“Aw,” she whispered, feigning concern, “I’m sorry.”
“No, you’re not.”
“Yeah—you’re right.” He glared at her, and she smirked, “Hey, you’re the one that started it.”
“Hey, I’m the one who’s injured here.”
“Yeah, but it was your own damn fault,” she replied, patting him on the knee before getting up again. “Oh, and when you’re feeling better, Mac wants you and I to handle the Milano interview.”
He gave her a look again as she left, “I hate you.”
“Love you too, Flack,” she said with a grin before walking out of the room.
