Catherine had been watching him since he had arrived at the lab. He had come in when their DB turned out to be an NYPD officer on vacation, and while she didn’t mind the extra set of eyes, he and Grissom hadn’t gotten off to the best start. Not that it really mattered, he was mostly dealing with her anyway. And she had to say, she found him—interesting, to say the least.

He was focused, and determined. He was a workaholic in the worst way. Yet there was the subtle—something—that was holding her attention and keeping her from writing him off entirely. She wanted to see how he acted outside the work environments, see if she could get him to loosen up a bit, find out more about him. See if there was something more to him than met the eye.

She approached him slowly, watching his hands as they moved between crime scene photos in front of him, and not the rest of the world. She knocked lightly on the doorframe, and he still didn’t look up. He had been working like this since he had gotten here, and Catherine was getting ready to go home for the day. She was starting to wonder if he was even going to. She hesitated for a minute, and she was about to speak when he beat her to it.

“I know you’re there, Miss Willows,” he said, glancing up briefly with slight smirk.

“While I appreciate the formality, Detective, we’re working together,” she sighed, “It’s Catherine.”

“Sorry—Catherine,” he said slowly, “Is there a reason you’re watching me?”

“I was just wondering if you were clocking out soon?” Catherine asked, leaning slightly in the doorway of the layout room.

“Wasn’t planning on it,” Mac replied, barely looking up from what he was doing. He and Catherine were both supervisors, so they saw eye to eye on the idea that things needed to get done, or he had at least thought they had. “Why?”

“I was gonna offer to buy you a drink,” she said, walking over to stand next to him, “Give you the lay of the land a bit.”

He blinked up at her for a second, before turning back to the evidence, “There’s still a lot of evidence here to process,” he stated.

“You’re no fun,” she teased.

“No offense, Miss Willows,” he began, “But I’m here to do a job, and I’m not going to spend time away from this case until I have something solid to tell this officer’s wife back in New York.”

“Well, no offense, Detective Taylor,” Catherine replied as she turned and started to walk away, “But you need to get out more.”

Mac slipped on his suit jacket as he walked out of the lab to head back to the hotel. The case was closed, and he was going to head back to New York in the morning. He was ready to go out and get a good night’s sleep, but stopped when he spotted Catherine working in her office. He knew she was trying to make him feel comfortable by inviting him for a drink, but he needed to focus on the case. He did hear her though, and at that moment, she sounded a lot like what Stella was usually telling him.

He considered it for a minute. It was his last night in Vegas. There was no harm in having on drink with a colleague. He walked over to the door and knocked on the frame. Catherine looked up in surprise and gave Mac a smile over the tops of her glasses.

“Detective Taylor. How can I help you?”

“If you’re going to insist on my calling you Catherine, Miss Willows,” he began with a small smile, “I’m going to have to insist you reciprocate.”

“Fine,” she said, her smile widening, “How can I help you, Mac?”

“I was wondering if the offer for that drink was still standing,” he said, leaning against the doorway of her office. She slipped the glasses off her face and studied him for a minute.

“That depends,” she replied, “Are you really interested in having a drink with me, or are you just doing this because you feel bad that you turned me down before?”

“If I wasn’t really interested, I wouldn’t be asking,” Mac replied, giving her a look.

“I see,” she nodded, “You’re not going to talk about work the entire time, are you?”

He chuckled slightly, “Considering we don’t know each other that well, I think we can find some more—interesting things to talk about?”

Catherine nodded with a laugh, “I guess you’re right. Give me a few minutes to finish up this paperwork?”

Mac nodded, “I’ll see you at the door.”

“I’ll look forward to it,” Catherine said with a smile as he walked towards the door. No matter how the conversation went, she was determined to make that man had a good time. After all—

—This was Vegas.
