“Ryan, what did you do?” Valera asked Ryan as he walked into the DNA lab. Ryan gave the her a look, before responding, feeling confused.

“What do you mean?”

“Maka’s looking for you. And she is pissed,” Valera said, “Like—if she catches you she may kill you pissed.”

Ryan’s frown deepened. “What did I do?”

“You’re supposed to be answering that question,” she frowned, “You mean you don’t know?”

“No, I don’t. I can’t think of anything I might have—” He closed his eyes and shook his head, “—damnit.”

“You figured it out?”

“I might have said something to Delko about Maka going back to New York,” Ryan replied, “And that might not have necessarily been the case.”

“You do know that she and Delko kinda had this thing, right?” she said.

“Yeah, that’s why I said something,” Ryan sighed, “I didn’t want him to get his hopes up for something to happen if she was just going to go back to New York.” Valera gave him a look and he continued, “I was just being a good friend.”

“Did you ask Maka if she was going back to New York?”

“Yes. She said she wasn’t sure.”

Valera looked like she started to say something, but then she shut her mouth again, looking slightly frightened. “I found him.”

“I noticed,” Maka’s voice came from the door, and Ryan spun around. He could tell she was angry, but there was a deceptively easy smile on her face. She had never been this pissed at him. Ever.

He was so screwed.

“Hi,” he said, smiling slightly.

“Hi,” Maka sighed, “Can I talk to you out here for a minute?”

“Actually—I would prefer we stayed here,” Ryan sighed, “Just so that I have a witness.”

Maka walked forward, wearing the same smile, before grabbing him by the arm. “I think we should talk out here.” He felt her nails start to dig into his arm and he winced, “Now.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he nodded before following her out into the hallway. Once they were outside, she spun him around to face her, “You told Delko I was leaving?!?!?”

“I thought he had the right to know.”

“Thought he had the right to know!?!?” she glared, “When I talked to you, I hadn’t made a decision yet.”

“C’mon Maka,” Ryan said, crossing his arms across his chest, “We all heard how you talked about New York. I figured since you didn’t jump at the chance of staying here, it wasn’t that much of a stretch to consider that you were going home. But apparently I was wrong.”

“Yeah. You were really wrong,” Maka sighed, “Why didn’t you just let me handle this myself?”

“Because I could see Delko getting attached, and I wanted him to keep that possibility in mind.”

“So you tell him I’m definitely leaving?” Maka glared at him, “First of all, whatever’s going on between me and Delko is none of your business. Second of all, I told you I hadn’t made a decision yet. If you were telling him anything at all, you could have at least told him what I told you instead of jumping to conclusions about what you think I’m going to do.”

“I was just trying to make sure no one got hurt.”

“Well, you really succeeded there. Thanks a lot.” He heard the catch in her voice, and frowned.

“Wait—did something happen between you and Delko?”

“No, nothing happened between me and Delko,” she said crossing her arms across her chest, “Because he thought I was leaving Miami.” She started to walk away and spoke again as she passed his shoulder, “So, again, Ryan: thanks a lot.”

“I’m sorry?” Ryan suggested, turning around to face her, and she turned around and shook her head.

“Shouldn’t have opened your mouth to begin with,” she replied before walking away.

Eric glanced up when Ryan walked into the lab, and from the look on his face he could only assume that Maka had tracked the other man down.

“Whatever I inadvertently screwed up between you and Maka, I’m sorry,” he began slowly, “I didn’t realize what I was doing, and I know that I shouldn’t have opened my mouth. But please, God, say something to her so that I can talk to her about the case without feeling she might kill me.”

Eric laughed slightly, “And what makes you think something I say is going to make a difference?”

“I’m really just hoping for anything at this point,” Ryan replied, “I’ve figured that as far as the damage that is done, you saying something can’t hurt.”

“And what makes you think I will say something to help you?” Eric said, looking up at him.

“I know I shouldn’t have said anything—”

“But you did Wolfe. And if you had kept your mouth shut, me and Maka would be in much better moods.”

“OK, that was too much information,” Ryan shook his head, “Look, just do something, please? I didn’t mean any harm.”

“I’ll try,” Eric replied, “Can’t guarantee it’ll work.”

“Thank you,” Ryan nodded, before backing out of the room.

Maka didn’t look up when she heard Eric stop and sit at one of the chairs in front of her desk. “Ryan ask you to speak to me on his behalf?”

“Maybe,” he said, and she grinned, “He really was just looking out for me.”

“I know,” she sighed, “But it wasn’t his place to say anything. And I’m still going to be shooting him death glares for a little while. Just to keep him groveling.”

He grinned at that, before speaking again, “Does that mean you’re staying?”

She sighed softly, and bit her lip, “That’s what it’s looking like. Besides, I heard it finally started snowing in the city. Who wants to go back to that?”

He smiled before continuing, “In that case—can we get a do-over on last night?”

“Huh?” she frowned.

“I really do like you,” he said, eyes falling down to his hands, “And I don’t really think what I said about you—I mean, at the time I did but—” He looked up at her and gave her a bashful smile. “—I really do know better.”

“I know,” she nodded, “And you were just confused, and as I said—I don’t blame you.”

“So is that a yes?” he asked.

“Give me a few days to really cool off,” Maka replied, “Once I’m done torturing Ryan for this—then we’ll see. It’s a bit of a distant yes, but it is a yes.”

“OK,” he nodded, before getting up.

“You are still pissed at Wolfe, right?” Maka asked as he walked away, and he turned to face her with a grin.

“Oh, yeah,” he nodded, “I’m just waiting for the right moment to—exact my revenge if you will.”

“When you do—let me know,” she grinned, and he grinned back.

“I’ll do that.”
