goddess_loki asked me to write the other half, where Danny and Maka were doing shots in Sullivan's, and it turned out a bit angstier than I had anticipated. Kinda.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI: Miami or CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.
Kaile took another sip of her champagne, and glanced around the room. She had been chatting with Stella and Angell for the better part of the time, and now that they had wandered off to talk to someone else, and she had lost Calleigh, she was alone. She wasn’t so sure she was comfortable with being alone. Being alone tended to attract unwanted attention. She generally was thinking of it in the form of her old boss, the one that had shipped her to Miami in the first place, but she knew that in the back of her mind she was thinking more along the lines of a certain CSI who, if he tried hard enough, could talk her into doing almost anything. So far she had managed to be lucky enough to avoid him, but she wasn’t pushing her luck just yet. She started to make her way to find Calleigh again, when there was a familiar voice behind her.
“Detective Kaile Maka.”
She closed her eyes briefly, knowing she was busted, before turning around to face him, “Messer.”
She watched as Danny looked her up and down once before shaking his head, “Damn, I had almost forgotten how good you clean up.”
She felt the blush burn across her cheeks. I hate you. “Well, I figured I might as well aim for knock ‘em dead considering I haven’t seen you guys in a while.”
“Well, I think you hit your mark,” he said, starting to move closer to her, “How’s Miami?”
“Hot,” she said, “Humid. Prone to a lot of explosions and crime sprees. I hear the weather’s been pretty crazy up here.”
“Yeah, I mean seventy degrees in December, what the hell is that?” he replied, and they both watched each other for a minute. She could see in his smile that he knew all he had to do was suggest something and she would go along with it. She always used to, and now she wasn’t so sure she wanted to, but she might just anyway.
“You know what?” he began, “Why don’t we get outta here?”
“And go where?” she asked.
“Sullivan’s,” he replied simply, and she gave him a look.
“You want me to go to Sullivan’s dressed like this?” she said, the look intensifying.
“Would you rather wear nothing?”
“No—I just think I’m a bit overdressed.”
“Well, you’re not,” Danny replied, “C’mon, Kaile. Bet I can still drink you under the table.”
She scoffed, “That’s just bullshit.”
“Oh yeah?” Danny smirked.
“Yeah,” she said, before shaking her head, “Alright, you win. Let’s go.”
***
“Kaile Maka,” the bartender gave her a smile as she walked into Sullivan’s and slid up on the stool, “There’s a face I haven’t seen in a while.”
“Hey Bernie,” she said with a smile.
“Well, don’t you two look fancy?” Bernie sighed, looking them up and down, “Coming from Captain Flack’s banquet, I imagine?”
“Yup,” Danny said as he slid up onto the stool next to her, “I was surprised I didn’t see you there. I thought you and the cap’n go way back.”
“Oh, we do,” Bernie smirked, “But I never go to those fancy functions. The liquor’s never anything strong enough.”
“Amen to that,” Danny replied with a grin.
“So what can I get you two tonight?”
“Well, Danny seems to think that he can drink me under the table,” she replied, pointing to the man next to her, “And I need to show him that he’s sadly mistaken.”
“When do you go back to Miami?”
“Tomorrow morning,” she replied.
“You sure this is how you want to spend your last night in New York?” he asked, giving her a look.
“Positive,” she nodded, knowing that these were her fatal last words, “Bring on the tequila.”
***
Danny didn’t wind up drinking as much as he thought he would. Kaile, however, was another story. The more she drank the more she talked, and the more she talked the more she drank, until Bernie confirmed that he was cutting her off, and Danny nodded his agreement.
“Hey, didn’t you say you have to go back to Miami tomorrow?” he asked, and she nodded slowly.
“Uh-huh,” she said, giggling softly after that.
“Well then,” he sighed, “I think we better get you back to your hotel room. What do you think?”
She sighed heavily, “O-K.” Bernie shook his head softly, before turning to Danny.
“I’ll call you two a cab.”
“Thanks, Bernie,” Danny nodded before helping Kaile off the stool and having her lean heavily on him so that she didn’t fall. Once they were in the cab, she leaned against his shoulder, before speaking.
“You know I missed you for a while.”
“Did you?” he said, looking down at her in surprise. He knew she wasn’t lying to him; she tended to spill all her secrets when she was drunk, but he hadn’t expected that kind of emission from her.
“Yup,” she nodded, “I was wondering if you were thinking about me. It was kinda pathetic and childish when I thought about it, so I didn’t say anything.”
“I see.”
“And then I met somebody else.”
Damnit. He had always known in the back of his mind that he had been missing his chances, but he didn’t realize how true those thoughts had been. He didn’t say anything to her though, he just let her keep talking.
“And he’s like you, but he’s not you. And sometimes it feels like he actually really sees me.”
He hesitated for a minute, before speaking again, “I screwed this up, didn’t I, Kaile?”
Sober Kaile might have told him no. Sober Kaile might have told him that there was nothing there to screw up to begin with. Drunk Kaile was a bit more blunt.
“You bet your ass ya did.”
***
Kaile felt like she had been hit by a bus. Her head was throbbing, her body ached, and she prayed to God that she wasn’t called into work when they got back, because she was not going to be a nice person to deal with. And on days like that, they usually paired her with Ryan. And she and Ryan didn’t get along as it was. She had made it to the plane before Calleigh surprisingly, and was in her seat when the other woman finally got on board. She opened an eye briefly, and studied the woman carefully.
“Where did you go last night?” Maka asked and Calleigh gave her a look.
“Why?”
“Because you were supposed to be there to stop me from leaving the gala, going to Sullivan’s and doing tequila shots with Danny Messer,” Maka sighed, closing her eyes again, “I’m going to take two asprin, and sleep the whole way back to Miami, and maybe this hangover will go away.” She turned in Calleigh’s direction but didn’t open her eyes, “But where did you go?”
Calleigh paused before responding, “Detective Flack offered me a cup of coffee, and I took him up on it.”
“Did you?” Flack was so transparent. “He likes you, you know.”
“Does he?” Calleigh said, somewhat surprised, “He barely knows me. He was a witness on a case, but the first time we actually talked to each other was last night.”
“Yeah, but he knows that you could very easily kick his ass,” Kaile grinned, “For some reason that turns him on.”
Calleigh laughed, “Really?”
“Really.”
Calleigh nodded slowly, “That’s interesting.”
“Yup,” Kaile replied, before popping two aspirin, “I thought it would be.”
“But you and this Danny,” Calleigh said, “Did something happen—?”
“No, no,” she shook her head, “Nothing like that. Just—when I get drunk I’m not exactly the most sensitive of other people’s feelings, and I just tell how I really feel. I’m afraid I might have said something—” Her voice drifted off and she shook her head, “Not like it matters. I’m going back to Miami anyway.”
“But what if you go back to New York?” Calleigh asked, “What happens then?”
“I’ll deal with it then,” Kaile sighed before running a hand through her hair, “Wake me up with we get back to MIA.”
